Hey folks,

This is my fist post ever and I couldn't be more thrilled. I currently have in my possession some equipment that was purchased back in 1993 I think and HAS NEVER BEEN OPENED. My father got everything, but then "household" issues prevented it from ever being used.

Now, after 18 years or so I am finally going to have a place for everything.

Here's what I have still new in sealed boxes:

1-Tascam MS-16
1-Tascam M-520
1-Tascam PS-520
2-Tascam DX-8DS
1-Panasonic SV-3500 DAT
1-Rane 6ch Headphone amp

^That's it for the new (old) stuff... ;-)

I'm very interested to see how it integrates with my current Windows 7/Cubase, and MacBook Pro/ProTools & Logic rig!

I suppose I'm looking for any insight or comments on this situation. Any must knows when it comes to setting up an analog rig for the first time? Do's and Don'ts? I am almost blown away by the fact that this stuff has never been used. I sure hope it's all still 100% working, but it should be fine. Nobody's touched the boxes in ages.

I was also half tempted to try and sell this stuff, but I think it's going to be more valuable for me to use it.

I'm open to any feedback!

Thanks!

Well, i don't have any feedback.

But I have to say that I literally laughed out loud when I saw that 1993 is considered "vintage". :D :D :D

I turned 30 that year. If that was a vintage year, I wonder what I'm considered as by the young of the world now !

Vintage applies to 25 years and older isn't it? Then you move onto antique... Me I'm an old Ancient!
Then somewhere in there is fossil, relic, dust.

Kids born in 1993 should be leaving high school this year or next.
I'm driving a 1994 Ford Explorer which I consider to be a recent model.

Guess I should keep this on topic ..... a 73 Jeep that I will trade for vintage gear. :D

No... :D ...I'm just saying on eBay, everyone calls everything over 10 years old "vintage"...at least in the Musical Instruments category.

People just like that word - "vintage"....it sounds better than "old" or "used". ;)

Then E-Bay is wrong.
Ten years old is not vintage and E-Bay is only a market place.

:D

It's got nothing to do with *eBay*...they have no policy about how old something has to be before it's called "vintage"...it's just become very commonplace to see all the audio gear sellers (who don't really know/understand) trying to hype up their items by calling them "vintage".

It's very comical... :)

That's some very cool gear... If you don't want it you could send it to me I'll pay the shipping :)

My bad

OK everyone. I made a mistake in calling this stuff "vintage" .... I guess it just seems older to me than it really is. Years feel like decades when you have new gear you're not using I suppose.

I think after considering the uber acceleration of technology in the recording fields, a 16 track analog recorder could very easily be considered "vintage".
What a cool machine tho....I miss those analog days now that I have gone over to the dark side.:D

I miss those analog days now that I have gone over to the dark side.:D

Actually, it's more the "bright" side...'cuz when recording direct to DAW, everything seems much brighter and starker to me. :(
With tape, while I wouldn't call it "dark" it certainly isn't as BRIGHT as D-to-D is. :D
I like how tape smooths out and rolls off some of that bright/stark top-end. :)

An item 25+ years old is officially an "antique". "Vintage" properly denotes the year a wine was made.

I don't think you'll be needing that MS-16.
It is very hard to get "good" tape for that machine.
So,..I think you should sell it to me,...I'll give it a good home.:D

I generally consider "vintage" to mean- anything that you can sell for more than it cost when it was made, adjusted for inflation. That standard separates "old" from "vintage" pretty quick.-Richie
