broken mic!

Do you mean the grill?

Personally I would send it back to the manufacturer and have it done properly.

Firstly, the diaphragm looks pretty bad and in need of a professional clean.

Also the grill is part of the Faraday Cage that protects the mic. from RF interference and if it's not on properly you will not protect it from RF properly.

Yeah its pretty bad the diaphragm needs a clean but I heard that the dust on it would not effect the sound?

The way it broke was irritating. It was for a artist performance and he needed a mic. I did not have any cheap dynamics at the time just the ADK 51 (which I love) which cost me £100.
Before I handed it over to him I said "Be carefull with that mic its not a stage mic", he went on and did his performance ranting about some kinds arty stuff with effects on his voice, then at the end of the performace he threw the mic on the floor!!!
He reckons he was possed with an evil spirit for his performance, I reckon he is full of BS and just ignorant but hey.

I was planning on doing the Royer mod to this mic as I am pretty sure it is an MXL 2001 in disguise (this was the original mic the mod was built for).
 
I'd send the mic for a professional repair and hand that moron the bill.
 
Put a little silastic around the edge of the grill and push it back on, clean off excess and leave for a while.

OUCH !

That happened to me once with the promoter standing right next to me at FOH we just looked at each other and shock your heads it was an older SM58 worth $75. tops, but still!

The best thing at the end of the night that <hip-hop artist> asked for his $250. cash payment for his performance .... long story short .... the promoter right in front of him gave the cash to me and told me to give him the microphone. :) That was a win for me!

In this case, there is only one solution.

He buys you a new mic. and you give him the broken one.

Absolutely no excuse - deliberate damage - he has to be responsible for his actions.


Oh - and dust does affect performance.

It can absorb moisture and increase noise and cause crackling noises.

But don't try and clean it yourself.

However, the cost of cleaning is probably more than the mic.

So - get him to buy you a new one and he can do what he likes with the old one.

NO! - A mic. grill has to have full metal-to-metal contact all round as it is part of a Faraday Cage.

Yes - but because someone has deliberately smashed the mic - he is the one who should pay for it.

So you DON'T do a bodge repair - you either get a new one and the person who broke it gets the old - OR - you get a proper professional repair by the manufacturer.

Whichever - the person who broke it pays.

Whoever he is - he should stand by the consequences of his actions and pay up.

Absolutely - do NOT let him get away with smashing your mic., even if he is your best friend. He should pay the proper cost of a proper repair or replacement.


Hopefully it will teach him not to do it again.

True, but even using silastic, you would get some metal to metal contact as I am talking about a small amount, I only suggested it due to the suspect soldering skills.

HAHAHAHA you guys are funny!
No I cannot ask him to pay its been about 5 ears since the event its to late for that. I think he did offer to pay at the time but I am a lazy stoner and kinda left it alone because it was my only mic at the time and it did still work.
So back to my first post. Could I just solder it back together? That would keep the conductivity between the body of the mic and the cage?

So sorry to go on but nobodies really given me an answer. Will soldering it do? Is there a better way for me to repair this my self?
