Haven't been doing much recording recently so I took the laptop and my Profire interface to the Thursday jam and mic'd the lads up. We had 3 guitars, bass, kick, snare and two overheads. The drums are just practice pads so other than the cymbals, the rest is samples. I dubbed the vocal afterwards in the comfort and privacy of my studio.

I've been jamming with these guys for 30 years and we must have played this tune hundreds of times so it should probably sound a lot better than this heh.

Anyway...

Sweet! Good rockin' tune man. You did good on the mix with the overdubs and stuff. How do you rock out with practice pads????? :D:D:D:D:D:D:

It's my fav. track from Physical G because it had some seriouly aggressive guitar wah.
The prac. pads are an interesting idea for jamming!
Pretty fun run through but I do miss the harsh wah sound.
Good job with the ODs.

Is this a cover? I don't know it.

Sounds a little rough to me. It's very loud and some of the overdubs don't fit too well.

I like your original stuff much better.

Gerg didn't know this one? Wow. I'da figured this was right up his alley. Yeah great Zep tune.

Little sloppy here and there, but not bad. Loved the guitar sound. Sounded much like Zep's tone.

I'm not much more than a casual Zep fan. I don't hate em or anything. I just never got really into them.

Stairway is in my top 3 most hated songs though.

I actually really enjoyed it. Love the overdriven drums. Like the messiness, even. For what it is, I think it's a good sounding mix.

This was the first Led Zeppelin song I ever heard. On my 17th birthday.
Despite Robert Plant's high pitched vocals (a major surprize to me at 17. High pitched blokes meant all kinds of politically incorrect things.....or the Stylistics ! }, by the time drums came in, I knew I was going to fall in love with this band. For the previous two months, I had wanted to hear Led Zeppelin's music sooooobaaaaad.
On the fourth "drop down" comes one of my favourite pieces of drumming, ever.......
Simman is right, everything sounds distorted here, but because I quite like distortion, even on drums sometimes, it's less noticeable than it otherwise could be. To be honest though, it's only because I love the original that I don't dislike this version. It has moments of interest but it doesn't really grab me.
One of the kids I used to work with, I named Custard { I used to say "Custard Pie for short"} because she was so thick and I happened to be listening to Physical Graffitti at the time. I always rearranged my albums to my preference so rather than being the opener, this was actually third from the end. Once, a group of them collared me and tried to embarrass me on the spot by saying "why do you keep calling her Custard ?", in front of a big crowd. So I said "coz she's so sweet !".

I really enjoyed this too, I think it captured the Physical Graffiti loose feel dern good. Great job on the vox. Really liked it.

Heh thanks ido. The kick is a 13" Pearl tom and the snare pad has snares and if you rim it, it cuts through OK. Of course at the same time you gotta imagine you're playing a real kit as well...

Thanks Ray. Yep great song from a great album.

We ended up having to use the pads because we just kept getting shut down with the full kit. Weird, it was always during War Pigs that Noise Control came pounding on the door

Bonham was a drumming genius.

Yeah I didn't get the 'drop downs' in the right place. Maybe next time. Thanks for the listen

Hey thanks for giving it a spin

Very cool of all you guys to listen and comment.

I actually replied to all of the posts, but half of my replies just disappeared...???

I don't know WTF happened. Maybe this new fangled forum still has some bugs that need to be worked out

Sounds great to me, especially the 70's group/chorus singing.

The drums hang high in the mix for some reason and while I love the retro vocal treatment I would like them crisper and more intimate for a more modern/retro variation.
