Probably the PAF. Or if you want the stoner rock SG tone, the super distortion.
 
I have a pair of late-70s DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups in one of my Hagstrom Swede reissues...

...absolutely KILLER! :cool:

They are not too "stoner"... :D ...they just have a great R&R crunch sound...not too hot/over-the-top.
 
Why does it have to be a DiMarzio? And what, exactly, is a 'Gibson SG-like' tone?

Definitely a personal preference thing. One of my Les Pauls came to me with SDs and after a couple years I just couldn't take 'em any more, especially at the bridge. I switched 'em out for Fralin PAFs and been lovin' that axe since.

Well...the SDs are not a sound I would use on everything...but for the right kind of music they are killer.

Not sure if the ones made today sound *identical* to the ones made back in the 70s...?
 
You forgot 36th Anniversary PAF. Probably better than all the others. Not for hyper metal, but best overall sound.

My thoughts exactly.We need to know what style of music you play and that'll help with pick up choice.
I've used the dual power,super distortion,and the x2n.The dual power is basically the same thing as a super distortion with a toggle switch to change between a single pickup or humbucker.I play metal so i went from the dual power to the x2n.My one guitar had a super distortion in it when i bought it and i couldn't tell the difference between the super and the dual power.I eventually went with the stock ibanez pups in my neck and the x2n in the bridge.My stock ibanez pups are blade style and a lot like the x2n just not as hot.The x2n is a bit too hot and muddy in the neck position.

I have another guitar i bought used that had a semour duncan in it.I'm not sure what model but it does have a different crunch tone to it.It's in the neck position and i've often thought of switching it to the bridge but i never got around to it.A friend of mine has a semour duncan dimebucker and it sounded great for metal.It fed back real quick so he had to learn how to work with it a little more but the way he was able to get any note to feedback in pitch was awesome.Then again that was part of Dimebag's style of playing.

Agreed 100%! They'll push the front end of an amp nicely but they still retain tone and articulation. Good all-around rock pickup. Maybe a little hot for very laid-back applications.
 
The 'stoner' reference was referring to bands like Trouble who have a very cool nasally sound and almost always use SD's and marshalls. (and chorus pedals)

I seen Trouble a few years back at a metalfest in Allentown,PA.They sounded great.
 
Right now I'm doing an album for the ex-bass players (Ron Holzner) new band, Earthen Grave. I've known the guys in Trouble for about 20 years.
 
Not sure why DiMarzios either. I'd go with SD's, Bart's, EMG's, MEC's way before DiMarzios.
