I've been doing some research and narrowed down potential mics to this list. They have all gotten good reviews everywhere I found and seem to be good for a beginner. I will be using a mic for solely vocals and nothing else, so if anyone has used any, feedback would be great

Also any pre-amp suggestions would be great too, thanks.

MXL V67G
MXL 770
MXL 990
MXL 550/551R
MXL R144
Audio Technica AT2020
AKG Perception

Hmmmm. Well, I can attest for the V67G because I own one. It's a great mic, definitely has a lot of quality for the price!! I don't think 990s are that great from what I've heard, but I've seen a lot of good posts and reviews about the AT2020s and I think its bang for the buck is much like the V67G. Can't really help with any of the others, but I'm sure some others HR members will be along to help you out!

As a side note, what kind of music are you recording? Looks like you've begun researching so you might know this, but don't underestimate the power of a good dynamic mic either! :)

thanks for the suggestions. I will be recording pretty much just rap vocals maybe some singing, in a home studio which I have yet to build also. As for the dynamics I'm open for some suggestions too if you have any in that price range.

We have a couple of the MXL 990 mics and for the person on a budget I think they're a great value. You can get them in a "kit" with either the shock mount or the 991 for less (sometimes much less) than $100. If you can find someone selling a used kit (such a good deal they bought it and never use it ;=) and they understand nobody is going to pay close to new price for 2nd hand equipment they can be a real steal.

A lot of the mic guys here like the MXL2003A, I like mine, not a mic guy but it's nice mic. I got an AT2020 for 45 bucks new. It's a solid mic.

V67G blows away the MXL 990 for vocals. I'd recommend a ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp if you're just starting out - its a great deal. I actually have a brand new V67G if you're interested... its a beautiful looking and sounding mic... I don't need 2 of them though.
