So I am just starting out creating a home studio. Anyways the main thing i'm recording is vocals and occasionally an electric piano. For the most part im going to be taking pre created electronic back ground and creating vocals to it. Anyways I think i need a mic, as well as a sound interface and sequencing software. I have NO IDEA what type of each of the items i need, or what goes with what. Basically im lost. Im trying to do this for relatively cheep. I dont have a big budget. Also the computer i will be using is a mac.

THANKS for the help :)

Also. On you tube when people are singing and creating a video. IS that a recording software? Or are they doing something else?

Do you have garageband on your mac? If so there is recording program, and if not, you can download reaper from reaper.fm . It's what I am currently using and love it. Does your electric piano have a midi-out? Or are you going to put it through an amp and mic it? If you can answer these questions, someone here can give you a better overview of what you need. I'm quite a newb myself, but hopefully we can figure out what you need to get you going! :D

Ya i have garageband. And yess my piano has a midi out and i will be using that to record. I was wanting to find an audio program that say you mess up a note will fix that. Sort of like audio tune, or a tool along those lines.

You won't get auto tune with your limited budget. You will also find it hard to mix your vocal tracks with the prerecorded tracks because they have been mastered already.

I think we need a "How to do karaoke tracks" sticky...

Seems to be an increasing number of people signing up here asking exactly this question. Mostly they have very limited budget and (probably overly) high expectations of the quality of the finished product.

Not that anyone's reading the existing stickies anyway...

New track.kid15 on the block - go read the "Read this before posting" thread. A lot of your questions are answered within...

That easy first go up to the bartender and ask for a double wild turkey and a pint of bitters. NO WAIT .... :o that was last years MoreSound Co. Christmas holiday party.
But all of my employees said I did sound just like "Bing Crosby" except for the fact that I was singing a "Journey" song. :laughings:

They'll tell ya anything up until the time you discuss next year's salary with 'em... :D

There goes my long term plan to migrate to New Hampshire and study with the master... :)

I don't remember Yoda handing over any cash to Luke Skywalker.

Besides isn't suppose to be the other way around? I sit around all day and medicate/meditate and you do the work then bring me my meals and tea ... just like the Shaolin monks. :p

I would advise not to rely on auto-tune to fix your mistakes. If you miss a note on your vocal, just punch it in and record it again. If you flub a note with your keyboard, that's even easier to fix because your using MIDI. Just change the MIDI note in your sequencer.

I've never used Garageband, but I'm sure it would work for your needs. I know that Reaper will suit you plus a pitch correction plug is included.

Basically you needs something like the Presonus Audiobox and a mic. If you're trying to go cheap I'd recommend the GLS ES-57 or ES-58. The mics won't be the absolute best for vocals, but they're definitely not the worst. I would say that they are the best for the price. Or find you a used AT2020 or Studio Projects B1 which are both condensers. You could probably find some used for about $60.

and you say you'll use the MIDI out on your keyboard to record?
You do realize that no sound comes out of the MIDI out ..... only commands to trigger a sound module. So do you have decent sounds available in your 'puter?

You know...after poking around on the Reaper website, I might just have to give it a try. :D
