Do you know the note names on the fretboard?

I played bass for 7 years not knowing the names of any of the notes ! Well, I knew E,A,D and G. The day after I started playing someone told me but I just wanted to play so I never bothered{I was young}. Wrote loads of songs too. It was when I started playing with people who would say things like "this one's in C sharp" or "We go to A flat just before the bridge" that I thought I'd better re-learn the names of each note.....and remember them !:)

Yes, I do but they won't give me their phone numbers or addresses because they move around to fast.
 
Eddie Van Halen was asked this question in an interview once...I believe It was Sammy Hagar who asked the question...they did a small interview where Sammy asked eddie questions in a guitar magazine.

The question was

When you play a solo do you know the name of each note you play?

Eddies answer...its about 50/50

Im sure he knows all the notes however while playing hes more into the emotion of the performance instead of thinking about every note being played.

He also mentioned he hits lots of wrong notes as well however if it sounds good he leaves it in the song...playing the fast tapping technique is a bit forgiving if you hit a wrong note or two...dont really notice it much at fast speed.
 
i dont think about note names at all while i play. i just think about scale patterns or chord positions.

same. thinking only interrupts things. i only think about theory sometimes when i hit a dead end while putting things together, never when i'm playing. theory is a good tool, but ears are a much more interesting one.
 
In A Similar Vain

Yeah, I know it's "vein", but I'm trying to fit in...

A few years ago I was jamming with a really good lead guitarist after his band finished their gig.

I was playing rhythm guitar and we were playing a bunch of oldies that he didn't know, so I was calling out the chords as I did the changes.

After we did a couple of songs, he told me I didn't need to call out the chords since he didn't know them anyway, but as long as he could see my hand on the fretboard we'd be okay...
 
I realized that I needed to about a year ago and haven't gotten around to making it a part of my daily practice routine yet. I think I'll do that now.

Thats funny! I belive thats called an OXYMORON.:D Never ceases to amaze me. 12 notes and some people are just to lazy to find them on the fretboard and remember. No wonder they can't progress.

If people would learn/ memorize the 60 chord system, they would be well on their way to learning the fretboard. Its simply a matter of desire to be a good musician.Of course, untill you learn the names of the notes at each fret of each string ...well, I submit you'll be stuck in "rote"/pattern land for the rest of your life.

Its completely possible to not know it and wing it...and if you're a lucky person it might work out for you.

However, at least personally, doing what I do would be impossible (well..just a lot harder). I have to be able to know that the note I'm resolving to IS the note that I'm hitting. Nothings worst than building up, building up building up...and then FLUBBBBB.


I mean that I don't think you should sound mechanical as a guitarist and just run scales or anything, as guitar should definitely be about what you feel. But when you NEED to hit a B or G# for example...you need to know where it is at any position at any given time

Yeh that Django bloke was shit. So was that Wes Montgomery guy, he couldn't string two bars together without falling to pieces. Duane Allman was found out after blagging it in studio session for 20 years, fucking cheat. Clapton and Hendricks never had a decent idea between them.

It's a real shame they and thousands of other successful musicians like Chet Baker, Eroll Garner etc.. didn't devote more time to the notes they we're playing. Just imagine what they could have done. They could have been as big as the Beatles. No wait....:laughings:

Thats been my favorite post ever for ages. I'm surprised you haven't seen it before. Maybe it's because you don't do enough theory and too many gigs.:D
