Hello, I just purchased the Tascam DP 008. I bought this because I wanted something simple to record my song ideas and to learn more about multi track recording. After my purchase, I heard about the Fostex MR8. It looks like it has more to offer as far as features. Does anyone know about these two recorders and can you let me know your opinion regarding the two? I appreciate any feedback.

I have a Fostex MR16, seems like a nice unit, I just wanted to be able to share files with other people so an Interface made more sense in the long run.

Stick with what you have until you've achieved your objective of learning more about multi track recording. Then go full tilt boogie.

Looking briefly at the two, either should be good for your purposes. Both support 16-bit sampling @ 44 kHZ, not the 24-bit sampling of more expensive boxes. Both allow export of WAV files, so individual tracks you record now can be tranferred over later to a more capable recorder or PC software, although I think the exporting will be easier on the Tascam. The MR does indeed have built in guitar effects the the Tascam doesn't, if that is something you really want. (If such effects are important, I would personnally recommend looking at the Boss BR-600, which also has a decent drum program from what otheres tell me.) The main advantage I see in the Tascam is that it is true 8-track recorder, as opposed to the MR, on which tracks 5/6 and 7/8 are stereo pairs, essentially making it a 6-track recorder on which two of the tracks are stereo.
