hey, that's sweet. that wasn't what i intended when i posted that, but bonus for me. thanks. now if only i could get my reverb sounding the way i want it to.

Be careful in the reverb area--it can get dangerous.

By gosh, I do believe that makes it a triple gauntlet!!! (Didn't the Mayans say something about a triple gauntlet a year or two before the end of the world?)

Now I'm gonna have to revisit my mix and bring my A game just to have a chance at shuttin' yer Texas sized piehole! :D

Triple gauntet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stay tuned...

Okay...I'm confused. First Greg comes along and tells us all we've let a lot on the mixing table. I don't have a mixing table, but I do respect Greg's mad skillz, so I'm thinking I should go back and check out my work.

Then Zero says, "yep, these tracks don't mix themselves" (or something to that effect) when in fact, I thought just the opposite: hey, these tracks mix themselves!

I mean sure, there's always a bajillion (that's a lot, BTW) things one can do with a bunch of tracks--but this is "roots" music in the truest sense. Nice and rustic, even organic. I just wanna put the listener in the room with the band. I don't wanna put the band in an arena or a spaceship. Hmm...what am I missing?

Between Greg and Zero's comments, I figure I must've really screwed the pooch. So I go back and start over. So...I nudged an EQ here, tweaked a pan or two there, cleaned up the fade at the end...but...it's still pretty much the same. Oh well. Either:

a) I really don't get this genre
b) Greg & Zero are both spoofing me
c) I'm so fond of myself and my own work that I can't hear the obvious
d) all of the above.

As the world ponders that multiple choice mystery, I'll go ahead and post my final mix, replete with said minor tweaks:

I'm totally agreeing with you there. There may be a lot of things you can still do with the mix but I decided not to. I already got the feeling I did too much compression and EQ in my mix. My goal was to make it an easy listening experience, and I have to say the genre was a first for me. There are still some timing issues as gz pointed out (e.g. first verse vocals) and the timing corrections that were already done caused some pops and clicks along with the track cleanups, which could be evened out with some quick fades but I didn't feel like doing grunt work as I don't have much time to mix anyway ;) Since some tracks were already panned I left most of it alone, maybe panned it a little more into the direction to where I wanted it to sit, or evened it out a bit, but that was it. Maybe I was just lazy, hehe...

e) none of the above

I liked your mix most. Then again I may be in the same boat with you and I did not hear Greg's mix, yet. ;)

Cheers
Tim

Same here, Tim. I didn't delve into anymore editing of individual tracks (timing issues, etc.) like I would for a client. My goal (defined by my limited time available!) was to take the tracks as they were, and arrange them in such a way as to sound like a cool song. We shall see, huh?

(Very long drum roll, please...)

This is really getting fun and entertaining, but the hard work of picking a winner starts soon. Stay tuned...

A little of A and C. I'm not spoofing you. These tracks don't even come close to mixing themselves, IMO. They're a freaking mess. A trainwreck. All of them, except the vocal track. And I'm not talking about the sloppy timing of everything. I don't get this genre either, but it's just instruments.

These tracks are what happens when you put a bunch of amateurs in a room with only three hours to record a song. But what the h*ll, it's a mixing contest for fun. How about we call it TRAINWRECK MIXING BLUES??

I'm not dogging on your tracks. They're definitely usable and interesting. I'm just saying this song most definitely doesn't mix itself, unless you want a bad mix. Even the drum tracks need a lot of work.

Hint..................The drum overheads are badly out of phase

Start there. ;)

I agree that the drum tracks COULD use a lot a work if you wanted them to sound like something they weren't. As they are, they have the grainy, rootsy feel that fits with this song--IMHO. So I did "moderate" work on the drums--just what I thought it took to make them fit with the rest of the tracks, but that's about it.

good stuff for a bunch of amateurs. post more. :D

i don't know when you plan to end this, but i think i'll try another mix tonight either way.

Alright, pick a winner already! Greg keeps rattling my cage and I've got crops and cattle to tend to. Can't spend all the live long day remixing this puppy. Here's my final word on the matter. (And it may be worse than the previous versions!)

Oh, by the way, you can see from the pic I posted earlier that whether I win or not, I'll need a cup holder with my crown.

I disagree. They need work to sound like what's actually being played.
I'm just thankful that poeticintensity was nice enough to lay down some drums for this piece. Everyone should hang some rep points on poetic for that. He's a good guy.

I do think there is one mix submitted so far where the drums sound clearly better than all the others (to me). In fact, it's my favorite so far, mostly because of the drums. But don't ask, 'cause I ain't tellin'. Still waiting for poetic's input as well.
