Compression external or internal?

I always use some compression(outboard unit) before I go into my DAW. However I've noticed If I put a compressor as an insert in Cubase 5 its on the recorded signal. Is this the same thing? Can you use a Plug-in to get a better signal etc, the same as an outboard unit?

Nope. Plugins only affect the signal after the A/D conversion.
