Mix these tracks!

So, a few people showed interest in practicing their mixing with some raw tracks. So, I put up the tracks to my version of "Amos Moses".

I'm pretty sure you can just hit "DOWNLOAD ALBUM" instead of having to download each track individually.

If you don't want to download anything before knowing whether this is something you'd even WANT to mix, click the above link and my version of the song starts playing automatically on that page.

I don't want to call this a mix competition, because I honestly don't know if I'll be able to put in the time to "judge" it. Anyway, I'm not about judging this kind of thing.

But if you feel like mixing it down and then posting in this thread, that would be great. I'll try to listen as much as possible, but the thread is here so you guys can also discuss, advise and critique each others' mixes.

A few tips on the tracks:

You don't have to follow any of this. Just suggestions based on what I did.....

I put guitars 1 and 2 (labeled GIT 1 (left), and GIT 2 (right)) through an amp sim. I didn't like the distorted sound on the raw files, which is what you're working with here. Guitars 3 and 4, I didn't change, besides EQ, etc...

The snare has to have it's polarity reversed if you want a full sound.

The kik seems out of phase, too. But flipping the polarity didn't really help me. I got better results from nudging the track to line up with the overheads.

Besides that....GO NUTS!!!!

Great tune! As to not influence my mix I didn't listen to the original and just went and threw mine together, Afterwards, I listened to both.

I used Propellerhead's "Record" as the DAW, KRK Rokit 5's to mix down on and listened to the mix on some old pioneer stereo speakers and a set of Audio Technica cans. Seemed OK to me, Critique PLEASE......

Anyway, hope you enjoy my interpretation.

Loved the song. I'm going to download the files for mixing later. Studio still not wired right for mixing, but getting there. Thanks for posting this. I really enjoy mixing other types of music than our own.

Man, it's weird and pretty cool to hear myself mixed through someone else's ears. :cool:

Well, you got that slap-back on the guitar that a few people were Jonesing for. And the mix, is wetter in general. I like it. I think I'd get the kik up a bit, and maybe the overheads, too. I hear a lot of the actual snare mic from that snare. This is just my opinion, I'm not expecting you to mix it to please me...I already have my mix. :)

By the way, just curious. For those of you who have downloaded the tracks....Was it a fast or slow download? Did you use the "DOWNLOAD ALBUM" button, or did you have to download the tracks one at a time?

Just curious how fast my site is.

Download was relatively fast for me with the download all button.

Here is my mix of the track - done in Reaper:

(Not sure why, but I felt the need to audiolize the character from the song, like big bad john)
Also demoed a new limiter on this to see how loud it could be pushed.

It's already fun hearing everyones different takes on the mix. Comparing mastering samples always involves pretty minute differences, but mixes can be in complete directions.

It was fun! This is the first time I've mixed anyone's tracks on here besides mine. Plus it was easy because it was well recorded.

That was really creative and very cool. The only thing I noticed is that you replaced the drums with samples, which sounded cool. But, and I'm not sure how these work, it seems you had the trigger sensitivity a little too high, because there are a few kik drum and ghost snare hits that aren't there. On the other hand, maybe that was intentional.

Either way, I really enjoyed that. :cool:

Very cool. Pretty close to my mix, generally. I noticed you had the snare mic up more, where I used a bit more overheads. That's pretty much the only big difference. I'm digging the percussion you added.




This is fun.

Yeah, I think you and I do mix pretty similarly and have similar tastes with panning and effects. Your mix of this song was pretty much perfect to me, so it's not like I could improve on it even if I wanted to. Your overhead tracks are pristine. I've never heard overheads so nice. Mine are like herpes infected ass compared to yours. :spank:

My overheads are recorded with those dreaded AKG C1000's that everyone finds so shrill.:laughings:

They either need their ears checked or you've just figured out how to use them. They sound great. You get a nice and complete representation from your overheads.
 
and the proof keeps rolling that it's the knob twister rather than the brand of knobs.
 
Here is my first mix

I need to do some automation on the kick before Im done because its to loud at the beginning and also need to match tempo and delays...didnt do that yet...I need to master the song as well.

Kick sounds decent enough when vocals are playing however I need to turn down kick when there are no vocals or bass...kick may be a bit to puchy as well and needs some treatment adjustment.

Snare might need some beefing up as well.

My mix, done in Reaper on a laptop through a cheap set of A/T phones.

Honestly, to my ears there really wasn't a whole lot to do here. A little EQ, a touch of 'verb here, a touch of delay there, some compression and that was it.

Great job Rami, both on the song itself and on the basic tracks.

Where are the overheads???? There's no cymbals, toms and hi-hats.

Aside from that, I like your choice of using git 4 as the main guitar in the verses. Gave it a different feel. Kik is loud, I find. Overall mix is good. I'm just missing those overheads.:cool:

I can't take credit for that, considering it's a cover of a 40 year old tune. :)

Good mix. Nice. I just find the snare a little thin. And that doesn't make it bad, I just have to get used to that sound after hearing mine about 1000 times. You might have not flipped the phase on the snare, which would make it meatier. But again, this might have been a deliberate choice on your part. If so, coolness.:cool:

Aside from that....good mix. :)
 
I will work on the overheads a bit more and bring down the kick a bit...hopfully I can get it sounding a bit better.

Cool man, I downloaded last night (no problem there, btw) and will get started later this week. I'm switching over to Win7 and for sure will have a lot of problems to work out first.
