The attached link will allow you to download a 320 MP3 of a thing I've been worked on today after a lapse of a couple of months.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MIR2QS58
The backing, (that is all it is at this stge: I have the lyrics but Terry hasn't come up with a melody & seems to have deemed himself incommunicado for the last couple of months), is constructed from quite a few guitar tracks, some of which are heavily effected stereo things others of which are almost untreated.
Some of the guitar tracks were recorded DI or through the FX 500 with my Bruno Royal Artist and others were recorded micing a Marshal Super Bass MkII & a tiny little Pignose.
A couple of tracks were recorded with a no name AU$80 delivered telecaster copy.
The drums are a Roland TR505.
The percussion, aside from the kit, is real.
The tambourine needs to be reduced in the 1st half I THINK.
Today I added a stereo guitar track to the chorus (?) that used an almost untweaked effect Called Horror House from a Yamaha FX 500.
I also bumped the alien synthesque lines up a little in the quieter passage, (the lines are actually from a treated guitar nut they sound a little synthetic).
I'd love to treat the snare throughout like I did the intro thwacks but can't as the kit was recorded in simple stereo.
Now, to the point! Any comments, suggestions, observations would be appreciated and almost certainly acted upong except for the ubiquitous GFYS one.

Okay I give up what does GFYS mean?

Nice bed of tracks to work with Ray. There's a lot of tracks but they seem to occupy their own space and keep their definition. If you have a melody in mind use the guitar from Kennedy to play it, and it will sound pretty cool.
Hopefully Terry will get some free time to work on this. I know I've been pretty busy lately... I still try to get a tune in here and there thanks to Mike.....

Thanks Gerry,
GoFYSelf is the translation!
I thought I was looking at 24 hrs without a response.
When you refer to the guitar from Kennedy - do you mean the treated one that did the noodling & sustained chords?
Hopefully terry is just gathering strength for a full on assault.
Cheers mate!

Yes - the lead guitar that comes in right away at the beginning. Is that Number 1 ?

That's not bad Ray. Jangly without being ear fatiguing. Nice spread with lots of space for everything. I'd say this is one of your better mixes so far. Should be easy to plop some vocals in there.

yes this is very good Ray...solid drums and the bass is nicely in there with the kick...the guitars are pretty well spread and like Greg said, jangly without being fatiguing

they remind me of Jonny Marrs work circa their début album, and all the better for it

I look forward to hearing the finished song :)

Sounds great Ray!
Real nice and clear, bass sounds wonderful (but then that's your strong point...;)) I think maybe you could make the drums sound a little bit more real. Hope you come up with some great vocals for this.

ido1957,
Gerry, that lead stuff was done by Faderbug who was going to do some stuff for this track but I haven't heard from him in a couple of months since work in belgium became hectic again after the GFC. I may give him a nudge & see if he's still up for it. If not, well, as usual, I thought I'd knock on your door for a lead solo. If you'd like to noodle all over this please do.
Greg_L,
Thanks! I think taking some time away from this track helped with the mix as well.
kcearl,
ANY reference to Marr, with or without Mozza, is a fine thing & even the vaguest comparison becomes a landmark, (or landmine if I let it go to my skull), the Draize Train instrumental he did with the Smiths really sunk deep into my primordeal regions. Thankyou for the kind words.
joeym,
The bass is my Vantage with round wounds through a Behri BDI21 & then a 5db cut at 100hz, a 4 db boost at 200hz & a 3 db narrow boost at 3khz followed by some very light compression with Blockfish (the rhythm guitar preset). I used the comp as I wasn't able to completely automate the aders to deal with my uneven playing. Drums are pretty basic - straight from the TR505 as a stereo image. I'm appalling at programming drums so hope that I'll be able to drop in a live kit at some stage. Any ideas what I could do to the stereo drum image to improve it? Thanbks for your kind comments!

I only know how to programme software drums in the box. The good thing about those is the humanize factor, if used well they can sound pretty close to real. But I'm sure Greg or Jason could help you out with some real drums for this. If not, I'll programme some for you.

I'll try some soloing - may be a few days. Project deadline end of next week so this weekend may be working.

Joey,
Your drum tracks are great! Thanks for the offer. I'm sure to take it up some time. As you may have read, you were prescient - Greg has offered!
Greg,
Thanks mate - I've sent you a PM'd.
Gerry,
Thanks for the offer. I've sent you a PM also.

There ya go.......;)

id like to eat some vegetarian sausages while listening to this track...pm me lol :D

Sounds pretty good. Pretty laid back. Nothing seems too terribly out of place. Drums are the sore spot. Can't wait to hear what Greg comes up with.

Thanks PI,
Would you mind pointing out some of the slightly out to lunch out of place bits so that I can have a crack at better placement please?
AS to result post Greg if you look at my Soundclick song list & pull up Sewer/Night Out you'll find him in excellent form with a straight road & an excellent crack attack intro. On Kennedy Avalon, (a more difficult one for him to address as I'd based the song on a rockbossanova button on my TR 505), he came up with a really good variation which is steadier and more propulsive.
For this track? Well it'll be up to him as I'm a beggar not a chooser. I look forward to his part also.
