Castle Falls - A Collab w/ Joe Mizzi

Wow. Okay... That was cussin' awesome. Joe, for real, what's going on here? I mean seriously. That vocal is so perfect - so passionate - so commercial. Why aren't we hearing you on the radio? I'm not strokin', either - I'm serious. I consider myself a connoisseur of music, so I'm not blowing smoke at ya when I say - you've got a voice right up there with the big players. One of my personal favorites is Geoff Tate of Queensryche. You're right up there, man. Holy cuss.

The song itself is awesome. If I'm being honest, I found the guitars a bit grating. I know they're supposed to be harsh for this musical style, but I don't want my ears to bleed if I turn it up. The guitars are also slightly too loud for the vocals, in my opinion. When you've got Joe singing, you've got a gold nugget in your song. Let it shine.

Awesome effort, guys. I love seeing collaboration here. Oh, and on that note, Keith - if you and Joe end up collaborating and don't ask me to do drums, I might go jump off a bridge or something. How would ya like that on your conscience? :laughings:

Great song. Thanks for sharing.

Thanx Jason, you're always too kind. I once heard Gene Simmons say: nobody wants to know you until everybody wants to know you. Lotta truth in that.........;) Funny that you should mention Queensryche. When Brad sent me the song it reminded me of something out of Operation Mindcrime. I love that album.
Yeah, welcome aboard our collab, we'd love to have you play the drums!:)

I agree with PI. The guitars are a tiny bit too much. There's some squeaks and stuff in the L rhythm guitar that shock the ear when turned up loud. It could use more bass gtr too. Dropping the guitars a hair will have the vocals pop more without upsetting the balance of everything.

Great vocals Joey. I do around 12 backing vox tracks too, they just don't sound as good as yours. :laughings:

Rayc - Thanks for the listen! :)

PI- Ok, you got it - guitars down - it's done. :) Now let Jeff's lead have some mercy from your bludgeoning rhythm guitar on your song! Come on, let his 'wanking' be heard!

Joe- I got a story about that Queensryche sound. When I was experimenting with a melody, months ago, I was on an old QR kick and was using the lyrics to "Gonna Get Close to You" (Rage for Order) while I explored the verse melody. The verse still has that 'stalker' vibe don't you think? I was afraid I was ripping off "Jet City Woman" (Empire) with that bass-line on the verse. Mindcrime huh? Did I steal from there too? :D

Greg - I concur. Joe asked me to drop it a "fraction" before I posted. I assumed that meant about 1.5 db  I just dropped it another 2db and reloaded the file. Hmmm...now the drums seem too loud....NO that couldn't be. Thanks Greg :D

kcearl - You are welcome to hijack my thread anytime! :D Especially if it is used to plant the seed of a new blossoming love song with you and Joe :o

Listened to the new mix, and it's definitely better. I'm noticing something else that is kind of bugging my inner rhythmic sense. Because this song is so percussive, timing becomes very important - especially between the guitars and drums. There are hits here and there where the drums and guitars are off - ever-so-slightly. I'm not even sure if others can hear that, but because I was born with the curse of rhythm, stuff like that bothers me. The only thing I can think of to fix it, is just listen until you find a hit that is off, and slide the guitar track(s) over to match the hit.

Other than that, I think this rocks... hard.

And Joe. I wasn't being nice. I was being honest. The more I listen to your voice, the more I wonder why I haven't heard it before. Have you even tried to sell yourself as a studio vocalist, or in other ways? What's stopping you? I might seem out of place by saying this, but I'm gonna say it anyway... It really bugs me when modesty becomes a roadblock to living one's dreams. Yes, Joe, you really are that good (in my humble opinion).

oh yes...the second mix sounds great...didnt think the first one needed improvement but this sounds even better...nice one Brad

I haven't been on here for quite awhile, so man it's cool to log back on after a long absence and see a collab between you two. Hell yeah, this rocks. Brad, write more like this!!! :D

Joe, amazing vocals, a perfect fit.

Nice work guys!

Dave! Welcome back man! I checked your soundclick one time to see if you'd written anything new...:( Whaddya doin', payin' the bills on something? Anyway, thanks for the listen and the encouragement! I know you have a sharp ear and a honed sense of song structure; the fact that you found no 'nits' tells me that lightning has struck stuck here.

Can it strike again? Well, I do happen to have another similar song on the back-burner. I gotta mess with it some before I get the nerve up to send it to Joe. But if it's worthy and he's willing.....we'll see....:)

I can't wait to hear the new disco-trance-grind-core-country- love ballad piece that Joe and Keith are gonna do. That'll be sweet!! :D

Thanks,
Brad
:D

Oh man, paying bills, yeah for sure. I have had some ups and downs with the studio thing lately. In addition to me being just a really slow song writer, my DAW interface went DOA and it took about 6 weeks to get it back up and running, boy was that fun. On a positive note though, I now have a drum kit in my tracking room and I'm getting all set to record a new track or two with real drums. After getting a taste of the real drums that PI provided a few months ago, I just haven't been able to look back :) So, I spent the time while my interface was getting repaired buying a couple of new overhead mics, cables, acoustic treatments, new drum heads, etc. Turns out it takes a lot to record drums...who knew? ;)

I love seeing the collaborative spirit that's going on here, especially since it's yielding such cool results. If that other tune you have working is anything like Castle Falls, I can't wait to hear it. Also looking forward to a Keith/Joe disco-trance-grind-core-country-love ballad.

Hope to be back soon with some new tunes!

I really like this song. Joey, of course, RULES. Great effort by both.... too bad I can only listen on headphones through my laptop on a hotel internet connection.

Rockin'... Stop... pause.... wait... Rockin'... more pause... more waitin'.

I'll check it out again this weekend when I get home.

peace,

Nice song for sure. Bad ass riffage and awesome vocals on this one. The production is badass for sure.

Keep jamming this is great.

PI- Good ear. However, you've found something that may be outside the realm of my talent and patience.:D

klutzee - uh...thanks?

Chili - I feel your pain! Thanks for trying :) I put a soundclick link there too so you could've downloaded it while you slept or something :D

trumpino1 - Thanks for your enthusiastic response !! :D:D

Yo, Joe. My apologies. After reading that tonight, I have to say it came across much, much more harsh than intended. I intended no offense. Please allow me to rephrase:

"Dude, Joe. Your vocals are mad-freaking-awesome. Keep up the great work, and I hope to someday collaborate with ya."

No hassle, Jason, I know you mean well and I respect your opinion a lot.
:)

Ok, a little late on this. Lots of videos and colabs lately - which is cool :).

This sounds great. I was thinking towards the beginning I was hearing slight rythmic off-ness between the guitars and drums, but it either stabilized as the song went on or I got used to it.

Other than that, I have no issues with this whatsoever. The production is great. Guitars sound good and the integration of the vocals is pretty seemless. Vocals are great on this. Not sure I've heard Joey singing to someone else's tune before, so that in itself is cool.

Without being told, you'd never guess that some of the people involved in these colabs live 1000's of miles apart.

I do think 13 background vocal tracks would have put this one over the top, but I guess if you want to go with just 12, then that's ok too :p

Well, I actually wanted a 13th voice on the harmonies, but it turned out the other 12 were totally superstitious and wouldn't accept that.....so I had to drop it.:D

Where would we be without the net? Collabs are certainly one of the main positive things about it.
Thanx for the comments, Pete!:)
