Man guitar tone is so many things.
I'll +1 the 5150.
Buy one used, they seem to by up a little the average price I see is $650. I also personally like the 5150 more than the 5150II (and nobody can afford a III haha)(...)

I've used the 5150, it kicks arse. What about this one?

man i want a 5150 so bad, or that 6505. i played one at this jam room place when i was in my old band; it was the original 5150...not the 5150+. sounded so awesome....put an OD in front of it to clean up the muddiness of the high gain, and it sounded so sick. nice chuggy tone outta that guy

I gots me one of those. It's teh pwn. :D

6505 is the same thing as the 5150. Just reissued with a different name because of contract stuff with EVH.

I have a tubescreamer, but I've never needed to use it with that amp.

Muddiness? An original 5150? You must have been playing it through one of those crappy matching Peavey cabs. Those things sound like you are playing through a wet blanket.

Could have been in need of tube replacement. But yeah, with good tubes they normally aren't noticably muddy.

Yeah. Go ahead. Spend your money on a new amp just so you can make it suck too.

Scoop the mids, crank the gain and maybe....just maybe if you throw a bunch of money at it, it will sound better.

I learned the lesson, no more scooped mids for live sessions. BTW, by no means I'm gonna get a new head amp, I'm on a budget right now.

6505 is a 5150. Peavey just can't call it the 5150 anymore because of trademark issues. (yeah I know this has been addressed)

I wouldn't personally drop more than $600 for one of these used no matter what shape it's in unless it had some serious mods on it (voodoo or FJA mods).

I'll also add that this amp is somewhat honkey with it's mids. For example I don't personally run the mids higher than 11 o clock on the 5150, but wouldn't hesitate to go right up to 3 o clock on my fender or mesa.

Isn't the EQ active on those? Or is that just the XXX/JSX?

Anyway, yeah, +1 to a used 5150 or 5150 II over a 6505 or 6505+.

eh, at the jam room where we played, i highly doubt they kept up on mantinence with their amps. the head was missing a few knobs and many were cracked...the cabinet was this terribly disgusting old 1960a cab with holes all over it...pretty sure one of those speakers were fucked lol

You just seem very convinced that if you go buy a different amp it will just randomly sound better.

I went through ALOT of amps thinking that the next one would sound better...Save your money and make what you got work.
You will gain experience from it and you'll learn how things work so that when it IS time for you to get that special high end amp you'll know how to make it sound magical.

and believe me, I'm not trying to be an ass just for the sake of being an ass. I just don't want you to make the same mistakes I did.

I wasted ALOT of money... :(

And you're 18. That explains it all. Just had a practice tube amp in my room (Peavey Bravo 112), my only problem is during the gigs... I have encountered too many shitty amps in my way.

one thing I didn't see anyone address ..... you say you try to keep the gain and level on the pedal at 12 'o' clock. I assume that's because you don't want too much gain and you're right to try to avoid that.
But the level is just that .... a level control. It's not gonna add more distortion or gain. It simply controls the output level. There;s absolutely nothing wrong with running the level wide open if that's what it takes and it'll definitely kick your amp some if you crank that up.

From what i'm reading and maybe everyone else is missing is that you only have one small practice amp for at home?

Dude you gotta save some money, work some overtime, sell your sperm or whatever you gotta do and get yourself an amp that's powerful enough to gig with.Period.

You don't have to have the most expensive amp out there but you've got to stop relying on others to provide you with an amp to play through.

If you're playing through someone else's beat to hell amp with possible holes in the speakers as you say then no type of pedal or magic bean can save you from sounding awful.

If I was using a metal zone I too would be convinced that replacing it with a decent amp would make things sound better. And I'd be right. Distortion pedals suck.

But yeah, the mids still need cranking.

Not personally had that problem with mine. My mids usually sit at around 3-4 o clock.

.
sucky distortion pedals suck ....... good ones do not.
My Fulltone Fulldrive is a great sounding pedal and there are plenty of others that are great also.

Yeah, the Metal Zone isn't great but he can still get more out of it than he does right now.
And really, replacing any pedal with a good amp will improve your sound ........ all he has to do is grab a Mesa Mark V like mine ...... oh wait ........ that's $2k!

It's easy to spend someone elses' money but the OP has said he doesn't have any right now so may as well try to help him get the most he can out of what he has until he can get something better.
