Myspace still valid?

We used to find Myspace to be killer self promotion, but our band has backed off quite a bit lately. Do you guys still find it to be a valid promotion tool?
 
It was an OK networking site & is still better set up for music than fbook but it lost appeal with the fbooking types & so has fallen into the doldrums.
I still maintain a page for my band but haven't done much with it lately.
Rev Nation isn't bad but it seems to have a more limited scope.
Soundclick was good but I have lots of uploading trouble there now so haven't used it much.

Good self promotion is only good if you get rich? I think you have completely unrealistic goals of self promotion (baring the few lucky bastards out there).

Are you rich with your avenue of self promotion?

If getting rich is not the goal of self-promotion, then what is? To "be heard"? Lol. Please. That's pretty childishly idealistic and naive.

My avenue of self-promotion is minimal at the most. I simple don't care too much.
 
My space is fine for spamming your new album, because that's all people do there. No one cares about your music, they want you to listen to their music... LOL

Face book is weird...

You tube is fine for finding a but load of people to listen to your music, but half the people on YouTube are ass holes just to be internet shit talkers. It's "cool" to be a dick.

Soundclick is mostly poor recordings and bad performances.

I have a Reverb Nation page, not sure how great it is...

All in all marketing online is a real bitch. It's somewhat pointless...

I'm flattered that you think of me in that way, but that's not what I'm saying.

If not to make money, what is your goal with self-promotion?
 
Myspace is ok for promotion, If your doing "narrow" music like myself.
One can get in touch with likeminded, wich kinda is the point.
when we first joined I went for bands and people that share a musical style.

Its not been succsesfull in any economical way, but we have gotten some attention, and thats what it is about for me, make people hear my music and perhaps they leave me some feedback.

It also gave a bigger network of genree correct places for me to work my promotion.

It's possible that someone just wants to play music and have it be enjoyed.

Say I have a day job that nets me more than enough money to support my music habit and I don't need to make any money from the music itsself. I'd still want to promote the music because I enjoy playing it and want to share it.

Although if you're being featured in TV shows, movies, and a Microsoft commercial, you really SHOULD be making money from it.

Seriously? Unless you're handing CDs to your friends and family, you've got to self promote. I'm surprised this argument has gone on this long.
 
the problem is that the ratio of music makers vs audience has shifted dramatically over the last few years... so now whats on offer is huge and overwhelming. Any site promoting music has now so many other competitors thats its hard to stand out.

Myspace today looks amazingly passe and out of date..

would be quite cool to see a rock roots type site ... you could follow influences in a very graphic way to hone in on fledgling bands that might take your own pet favourites to present bands that might be right up your street.

The problem today is to sort through all the shit to find the stuff that turns you on in a very quick and efficient way.

We're making pretty good money off of it, but the asinine question was, "Are you rich". No we're not rich.

Hey don't take offense to what I said. Most people can't relate to my music at all. It's very much in it's own little niche, doesn't mean it bothers me when people tell me it's stupid or funny :D

If I hear such a sold out pop song like the stuff you guys do I'm like F that. Can't help it.
 
No worries dude. I was just trying to see if anyone thought Myspace was still a good way to sell music. It feels like the thing that used to be great for us is pretty damn dead these days.
