Good set of Ears to provide feedback??

Hey,

I love browsing the forum in my spare time for tips and tutorials, so i finally decided to register and see how my music productions sound with presumably more advanced music tech heads!

The first recording in question can be found here:

This one took a lot of coming back to. Overall I'd say the project would opened once a week for the last two months for listening and tinkering. I think it definitely sounds good, but i'm wondering if the good results could become great results, with a little feedback!

Aren't all the sections locked to guests? So how can you browse without registering which could have only happened in the past three days? :confused:

That all-fake-instrument-pop-autotune stuff aint my thing at all, so I have no useful feedback for you.
 
I'd search for things on Google and then threads on this forum would appear, I've been directed here a lot and gained a lot of useful information, just never thought about registering until now!

And yeah the auto-tune stuff isn't for everyone...

My missus wrote the song and asked me to make the backing, she's an RnB girl you see. I hate most of todays chart toppers, but when you make something out of your comfort zone with moderate results, you can only love it!

Personally I'm into creating big guitars and heavy rock. I have a few punk-ish songs nearly finished which i might post soon.

Well if i asked big dog studio engineers I'm sure it will be about the expensive hardware and software, and if i asked joe public it will probably be about "Dude thats too loud etc etc"

I find that home recorders like myself would be the option for the most useful feedback!

It's totally cool that you post here. I was just joking. You're in good company here with others that do the best they can with their home set ups.

I'm re-arranging things in the studio, so I don't have my speakers hooked up at the moment. But I'll give it a listen as soon as I can. :cool:
 
I'm not into the auto-tuned vocals myself, but I like the melodies and the guitar solo. I think it's as clear and crisp as you can get as far as sound quality goes but then again, I'm using desktop pc speakers. I just have a feeling the experts will say something about the female vocals needing some tweaking. As for myself, I give it a thumbs up.
 
Cheers dude! I did my best with the female vocals, i think something went wrong when tracking though, it seems to be very powerful (not in a good way)
 
Myself I thought it was great. The production was done spot on and everything fit really well together. I'm not into R&B that much, but this didn't really feel like that much of an R&B song to me. I thought the guitars and everything sounded great.

There was only one part to me that strikes interest and that is the vocals at 2:10 (or about there, the vocals in the right speaker). I couldn't here them, they're buried and I think that is maybe how you want them, but I was wondering if they could maybe come up a tad.

I think it is great though, keep up the good work.

What's in your list of "fake" instruments? Can we start out at hollow'd out logs and go from there? :D
 
I thought it sounded kind of like all the other guys you hear doing the same thing. That generic low budget hip hop sound. It's no where near as BIG and polished as something you would hear on the radio. To be honest I hate this kind of music.

Everyone is doing it now because it's what's in, the new pop. Played out, sold out. Like disco was back in it's day. Everyone sounds like they got fruity loops and auto tune.

It's a real nice sounding demo though. The vocals seems like a good amount of time were put into them. Enough for it not to sound like a karaoke song. Only advice I have it to go against the grain...

It sounds like Alvin and the chipmunks with a lisp.
 
nice work, the clap at the beginning seemed a little harsh and the autotuned voice was a little buried...nice guitar parts...the female vocals were good, they did sound a little like you'd repitched them a few cents but they still worked to be honest, and I quite like that "chipmonk" sound, Im on headphones but there did sound like there was maybe a little sibilance on them

The idea behind the vocals was originally to show the contrast between the robotic male figure and the loose female after a break up. I didn't mean for the end result to sound chipmonk-ish however!

Also the female vocal seems really hard to keep under control, next time i will record completely dry and see what i can do from there. Any tips to lower their intensity?

Grade 5 Pianist here, generally i tend to use a keyboard to trigger my fake instruments! i also don't have a string orchestra at my disposal, so I'm assuming software instruments are the next best thing...

You'd be better off playing the voices on a $200 Yamaha keyboard.

Software that is available to us will never give you a real enough sound.

But with a good honest performance, even the cheapest sounding instruments can sound decent if you know how to track them.

What is lacking here is both. Sorry, I don't really get into this genre to begin with, and this is not quite there.

But please take that for what it's worth. You are on the right track, you just need to change the vehicle you are on it with. auto-tune and fake instrumentation isn't it.
 
rubbish.....

some of the software has surpassed much of what it was trying to emulate in the synth world.....a $200 yamaha would be lucky to fake a convincing fart

I doubt half of you would spot a well played sampler in a mix anyway...but if it doesnt have a guitar, bass, and drums its somehow not real music...well yeah, you're kinda right, its not generic rock pish for sure

If you dont get the genre why comment? this is the mix clinic and people post to get comments or leave comments on mixes not "i hate this genre"


get some new material guys, some of you are getting fucking boring :)
 
Somehow i didn't think RnB would be a big hit here. Don't worry though, I'll upload one of my heavy tracks tomorrow and hopefully people will have a more solid idea of what needs adjusting in the mix, I really do just want to learn how i can perfect my mixes, thats all!

I really do hate commercial RnB, i tried to give this some kind of musical direction, bundled with the best sounding synths for the mix (Not the best in general).

Thank you all for the comments however, I'll be sure to tweak the mix and try and leave the robotic effects (Which really was purposely integrated for musical effect) out next time :cool:
