I saw the thread on Myspace Pages. Do any of you have Fan Pages on Facebook?

I have one but I have no idea whatsoever how to use it to get info to my friends on my regular account.
Or how to use reverbnation or ....... well ..... anything!

Wish I did.

:(

You're not missing anything. All of those social networking sites are a total joke and the playground for people with no self-esteem.

well then I'm fucking GLAD I don't know how to use 'em ....... losers!

:D

I probably play more and make more money than most of those guys anyway.

And my cover gigs aren't any lamer than some of that original shit I hear!

:laughings::laughings:

Is it true that original music bands have to pay venues to get to play?

:eek::eek:

I don't gig as much as you do, but I gig a lot in original material bands, and in 20 years I've never paid to play.

My band uses one, its very handy for gig promotion especially in your local city.

Pay to play usually means you have to sell a certain number of tickets, so the cost to you if you sell them all is zero. Its shit.

I use fb to keep in touch with family abroad and friends in the UK...I have a band page but its just linked to my reverbnation page..its pretty easy to get up and running

I prefer reverbnation to many others as local promoters sometimes use it down here to suss out new bands...but one thing about SD is that there's a hell of a lot of new bands, if you see an under 30 year old with a beard...he's in a band, there's a lot of beards

yup that sounds shit..its gone from promoters being in charge, to bands being in charge, back to promoters being in charge in that case...Im glad anything I do's for fun and the only band i played in never got out a rehearsal room :)

Right. Those ticket sale gigs are total bullshit.

It's fucking pointless to be in a band nowadays. The bands have no power in any situation. All the power lies with the clubs/promoters. You don't like your set cut and half so they can squeeze one more band on the bill? Tough shit. There's ten million bands that'll gladly cut their set in half to play in front of 5 people. I chalk that up to too many bands now and too many bands that totally suck. Clubs used to beg for bands to play. Now it's totally reversed. Bands are expendable and treated that way.

Gregs right on the money unless you're in a band that is going to fill the venue and making the venue/promoter money. These bands still call the shots and get ridiculous riders.

And even those bands don't make shit unless they have some kind of backing and they're not having to tour out of pocket. I've seen tons of mid level bands that fill the place yet still make 6 bucks a day.

yep ..... an awful lot of bands don't really care if they make money or not ...... it's a pastime like playing golf or something and they just want to play.

I don't really blame them ........ but it sure affects the pay scale for bands.

Hell, lot's of places don't even support bands at all.
I NEVER did a solo gig until I moved to Florida. I hated them and actually refused to do them period. But here, if you're in a band, you're not gonna be working much. Or at least making money. I see bands playing here for $150 for the whole band!

Just the way it is ......... so I do a solo now so I can work.
After 4 years I don't totally hate it anymore but how can it compare to playing in a good band? Answer ..... it sucks compared to a band.

:D

But that's just the way it is. Deal with it or do something else.

Lol. How do you play solo? Do you have backing tracks and shit? :laughings:

I'm one of those guys that'll play for whatever. I don't care. I just like banging my drums in a live setting. I'm 37 years old. I don't give a fuck about making money in music. I do have my integrity though. I'm not cutting my set short and I'm not making music to impress people or get fans. I couldn't care less if anyone likes it. I'm gonna play it, loudly, and you have no choice but to listen or leave. Either is fine with me. :D

What kind of stuff are you doing?? Jimmy Buffet covers for umbrella-drink tourists?? While I love Buffett tunes (I'm a sailor, it's required  ), I can imagine that would get old pretty quick.

I use a keyboard and mainly program drums and bass ....... they're there simply to allow me to do what I do and since a good part of that is improvisational, I have to have some sort of rythm.
I don't use karaoke type tracks since they sound so cheesy with all the full production with horns and strings and harmonies and shit. I hate that. I prefer to just have bass and drums which a keyboard does passably well. A reason to use a keyboard is so I don't have to be locked into any arrangement ...... I have loops and such that allow me to go to different parts of the song or end it when I wish.
Also I have mixing capability ..... if I get in a venue and the bass is too loud I can turn it down.

I do all my own seq's and have soent around 15 years getting them dialed into where they sound natural and not anything at all like karaoke since I did use to do a duo in BR.

It's really the only way to do what I do as I really hate guys that stand up there banging away on an acoustic and I really hate backing tracks like you hear people using their laptops or karaoke machines.

I mix the seq's softer than what I'm doing rather than try to make a recording type mix as the point of the tracks is simply to allow me to play and sing and what I'm doing live is the point of the whole thing ...... I don't want anyone actually listening to the tracks ...... I'm supposed to be playing good enough so that they watch and listen to what I'm doing.
I actually sound quite a bit different than most guys with backing tracks ...... a lot more 'live', It's actually a pain in the ass to carry and set up the keyboard but it's the only way to do a solo gig that I'm not embarrassed by.

That's cool. You got any video?

music of any kind mostly doesn't get old to me ...... I love to play and I don't worry too much about doing stuff like the record ...... I stretch out on almost anything ..... I take a very cool sax solo section on Brown Eyed Girl for instance. If you're an improvisor, which is my particular skill, then anything can be fun if you don't cop an atitude about it.

In a way I'm like Greg ...... he doesn't care about getting paid ..... he just likes to bang on his drums playing things he has fun with.
I don't care so much about what I play since I have fun with it all.

Don't get me wrong ....... there's stuff I enjoy more than others and I WAY prefer playing in a good band.
But I don't do like most other full timers that have been doing it as long as I have and roll my eyes all gig long and talk about how much I hate it. I find ways to make it acceptable and at least moderately fun.Why be grumpy about it?

If you don't really love to play then it's a sucky thing to have to do and I've certainly see plenty of players who hate what they do.
For whatever reason though, I'm still like that 11 year old that was fascinated by everything to do with music when I started.
I don't know why but I love it as much as ever.
And I play at a high enough level that allows me to not really give a crap about people who think I must suck since I do covers. :D

Everyone has their own preferences and priorities ........ mine is to have fun during these last couple of decades I have left and to get as good as I possibly can. Why? dunno ..... but at least I have a goal.
