Can anyone provide some advice please.

I am recording of a toshiba laptop ( you'll forgive the lack of spec details I'm at work) using the basic m-audio fastrack usb. I recently purchased a technics stereo amp and a pair of powered monitors but I can't seem to get everything working together.

I wanted to line out from the fast track to the amp via a phono2phono cable and then out of the monitors via a phono2phono cable, but for all my tinkering I couldn't get any noise. I tried to line out direct from the laptop and again into the amp via a stereo jack2phono and out of the monitors phono2phono, but nothing. I think I've tried every combination possible.

Anyway, eventually I got sound by going from the laptop straight into the monitors via a stereo jack2AV lead with the yellow video connection feeding the left speaker .

This meant the only way I could monitor my guitar input on my DAW (cubase sx3) was to run ASIO4ALL and not use the fast track ASIO like I want to and plug my guitar into my laptop mic input with a big2little jack converter.

Anyway I'm confusing myself now and I must be going wrong somewhere can someone help?

If they are powered monitors you don't need an amp, it's actually better that way because you don't have an amp adding "color" to the sound. USe the TRS outs from you Fasttrack and connect them to your monitors. If you can buy some balanced TRS instrument cables to avoid any unwanted noise.

Oh yeah, dump that ASIO4ALL driver and never look back.

After checking your suggestion (I'm still at work) its the basic fast track NOT the Pro model so doesn't have a TRS output, any other suggestions? Here's what I have to work with. Shouldn't the phono out puts work cos they don't.

Just use the RCA outs. Do you monitors have RCA ins?

Yup, just skip the amp and go straight into the monitors with your RCA cables.

I should have mentioned really but I have tried that already and it didn't work. The RCA leads were quite cheap (£0.67p) to be precise could that be the problem?

As I mentioned earlier in this thread the only way they work is through the headphone socket on the laptop via a stereo jack2AV lead with the yellow video connection feeding the left speaker.

Any more thoughts do let me know

1 check the rca leads to make sure they work.

2 connect fasttrak RCA outs to monitor RCA inputs.

3 make sure that the input/playback control on the fasttrack is about halfway.

4 make sure you turn the fasttrack output level up a bit.

5 you may need to go to your auduo devices on the laptop and select the fasttrak.
