Acoustic soundtrack

I loved the recording... I would have had the song start when the flute starts (you wanted my opinion yes?) but i really liked it. Great recording...

I actually agree with you--that's the strong point. But I had to score this to a short promo video with requirements from the client--start out light, build at this point, fall back at this point etc. So I needed a sparse beginning and had to use the flutes point of entry as a building point.

Thanks for the listen!

It's not QUITE the same progression as "Can't You See" (I'm 28, but i caught the reference instantly, I used to play that tune all the time in this bar band with a bunch of older guys and absolutely love that tune).

This is beautiful, hands down. It's the sort of gorgeous little acoustic interlude where you just feel a bit better for having heard it.

The only thing I'd want to hear differently would be maybe a heavy 'verb on the flute to give it quite a bit more percieved distance. Also, for some reason I seem to want to hear some sparse djembe on this...

Then again, fair warning, I'm listening on a set of Skullcandy Smokin' Buds from work - pretty good for earbuds, but not exactly something I'd mix on. ;)

Hey guys--thanks for the interest and the comments. It's cool to have some ears around that appreciate it. No offense to my client--but he won't hear what you did!

I sat down to answer the questions about the recording and ended up going a bit nuts. I wrote a freakin manifesto on recording acoustic guitar. I posted it in the the Recording Techniques forum:

Bob, thanks for the treatise on acoustic guitar 101. This is a good read for those wanting to learn some great acoustic guitar techniques. That Seagull looks brand new in the picture. Have you had it long? I've always wanted to try one, and now after hearing yours, I want to go play one. It has a very pleasing tone.

That pic is about a year old--so the guit was about 3 years old then. If it looks new, it's only 'cause I hardly ever play out. I just posted in the "treatise" thread about that guitar. They're definitely worth checking out. At the time I bought it, they were all cedar topped, but I think they do spruce now too. I was only attracted to them because of the sound of that cedar--so I'd start there. And while I think I got a great guitar for the price (about $750 w/the case--and it was dinged up & marked down) I found a serious sound quality jump between the plywood sides and back version and the solids. (No surprise there). The cedar already projects a bit less than spruce, so the solid sides and back made an even bigger difference.

Finally got a chance to listen - very nice! I can't tell the difference between fake and real flutes. Is this real? If so, did you play it? I'm trying to learn.

What was the commercial for, if you don't mind me asking?

The Flute is fake--a sampled indian flute from SampleTank 2.5. I still need to tweak the velocities a bit more to make it sound even more real.

The commercial (more like a promo video/slide show) is for a hunting guide/outfitter. Thus the rather odd title "In The Hunt."

The flute was really fake? No WAY! lol.

It still sounds good. It seems you can't go wrong with most of the flute sounds that are out now. Have fun tweaking velocities. My favorite thing to do second only to manually humanizing each note of a virtual instrument. The piece is good ear candy. I'm torn between that interpretation and "Wow, what a fantastic piece of fluff." lol. Perfect for a commercial, I guess. Anyway, I probably will try your acoustic recording recommendations - eventually. 'Tis been bookmarked. Thanks for contributing that.

What a lovely piece ! My 8 year old son just commented on how he loves the piece {and he has a good ear and surprizingly mature tastes and appreciation of all genres of music}.
I'd also recommend Sampletank. It's got some ropey sounds in there but it's also got loads of wonderful sounds in there and they're not like the synthesized abominations of old, you know, the "violin" that sounded like the beeps on those alarm clocks from the mid 80s....! I'm just learning about tweaking and customizing to get the human expression in. It's great fun putting one's self in the place of an instrumentalist of an instrument one can't actually play. By the way, knowing 4 or 5 flute players, I can tell you that the flute in this piece sounds like the player was in there with you.

Very nice acoustic work all the way around. I hear no string or finger noises at all-what was the trick for that, Bob?

Excellent !!!

I read the thread about the 'mechanics' of the recording. It just makes me appreciate even more. I listened about 5 times with my headphones, and I just love the sound, tone etc.

Congratulation !!! :)

This feels a bit redundant after all the praise so far, but it really is an amazing track.

Good tone, great musicianship and excellent recording. I don't even think the flute velocities need tweaking...

Speaking of the flute, I think it "makes" the track in the same way the french horn solo from the Beatles' "For No One" transforms it into something much more beautiful than what it would have been otherwise.

Having said that, here's a suggestion so that this post might be useful in some way: Might you consider arranging the track in such a way that you could bump the flute further back into the track instead of having it enter early on?

The guitar melody as it is is already beautiful so I was thinking why not let the guitar melody simmer and meander a bit longer and then let out the flute maybe a third into the track for a more glorious climax.

Hindrances to this working well are: 1) I don't know if it would work well in the context of the commercial; 2) It's a short track so how much building-up could you do, really?

I don't know if it's going to work... but just food for thought :)

I really like this tune. I'm an oldschool metalhead, and some of the picking reminds me of Jimmy Page.

I didn't look at the date it was posted beforehand. From now on I will only listen to songs that are 5 months old or less. Goodbye record collection, hello pop radio.

Hey, I don't come here to throw my attitude around; I just thought you were being a smartass and wanted to give you some in return. As for this cave you speak of, I've never heard of it. I normally just come on here to learn techniques and to share ideas with others in the online community, 'cos I just don't have time to mess around with the other BS. No offense intended, but it is fun to take the piss now and then.
