Why is Cubase 5 picking up more hiss than my previous recording software

After spending a year and a half making quality recordings with inferior software (Sony Acid), I decided to treat myself and buy Cubase 5. After fiddling around with it for a while, I finally started making records.

The first thing I noticed was an overwhelming amount of hiss, much more than I have ever encountered. I tried setting up my "DAW" (a 4 year old Yamaha USB mixer, my HP laptop, and a set of headphones) in different locations in my home but the problem didn't subside. I'm starting to consider recording in the relatively "hiss-free" Sony Acid and transferring the files to and mixing them in Cubase.

What do you think the problem is? I suspect that it may just be my mixer (some of the inner wires are exposed on the power cable), but as I said, I only get the hiss when I use Cubase.

Thanks for the help,

D. Lundy

PS: I'll supply additional details, if you need them.

Hmmm, I would really doubt that cubase is the culprit. It may just be picking up stuff that wasn't recorded on your other software. Have you tried different channels on the mixer? Have you tried different cables? Can you hear the hiss when your setting playing or does it just come through on recordings?

I've tried different wires and channels, nothing seems to work.

If all your connections stay the same and the only change you make is which software you use, then somethings wrong with Cubase. By that I mean a setting must be different. Both programs record the same input, so the only difference is in the configuration of one compared to the other.

Go back into Cubase and figure out what is different. Sorry, I can't be more help then that.

Can you plug phones into your mixer? If so can you hear the hiss there?
