i'm an editor not a sound guy...any tips?

OK, so I'm asking for help with a very simple setup, as my subject explains I'm a motion graphics artist/video editor...not a sound guy/girl. However I have inherited a nice little setup...problem is I'm having trouble setting it up!

Mac Pro
Blackmagic soundcard
Behringer UB802 mixer
Edirol UA-1EX

I should be able to switch between my headphones(plugged into the Edirol) and my speakers (plugged into the main out on the Behringer) on the computer . I thought I had all the ins and outs in the right places but apparently not as when I switch to my speakers I can't control them with the mixer.

This must come across as a very boring thread for those of you who know so much about this stuff, but please bear in mind I'm a total lamen with too much gear on my hands.

Any tips muchly appreciated.

pictures and/or flow charts and/or detailed descriptions of exactly how you have it set up now will help us see what needs changing.

Thanks for the advice. It is a pretty cool setup, that's why I'm keen to get my head around it! The reason I have the mixer is so we can record voice over's through a mic.

I will take pics/make a flow chart later tonight and post it here.

Why don't you use the phone jack on the mixer? What do you mean you can't control your speakers with the mixer?

You need to read the manual, if you want the tape in to go to the monitors you press the Tape To Control Room button.

I'm not sure why I don't just use that...this is how little I know about this stuff, is there an advantage in using both? The previous guy was using this setup with both .

What I mean is, I can't change the volume coming out of my speakers with the mixer. It comes out at a muffled volume and volume can only be changes in the application I'm using, ie if I'm viewing a video in quicktime and can only change the volume in there.

I have to use the behringer because the speaker jacks wont plug straight into computer or edirol.

The phone jack is designed for headphones, not speakers. The correct way to connect is to use the control room outs and to switch the tape in to control room. The headphone volume control then controls the monitor volume.

Yes, the link does work, just tried it. Go down the page and click on manuals, select the language you want.

Umm... It looks like your interface input is connected to your mixer input and your interface output is connected to your mixer output... It should be the other way around. Connect your interface output to your mixer input, and connect the output of the mixer to the input of the interface.
Except if that was the problem, it wouldn't be working at all... Nevermind.
