Hey folks. It's another poor ignorant college kid. I finally got a recording interface and I am very happy with it(the Zoom R16). Right now all I have as microphones are a SM58 and a SM57. I have found out that these aren't so good for recording(not vocals at least, Mic-ing an amp is pretty good with the 57). They just aren't very sensitive but mine ARE a pretty old. So, I am looking for a decent condenser for around 100 bucks to record vocals and maybe even some guitar.

These are the ones that I've been looking at:

AKG Perception 120

Sterling Audio ST51

Behringer B-1

Audio-Technica AT2020

What do y'all think? Any suggestions? What should I look for in a condenser mic?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Look up the studio projects B-1. It is a great Mic and I got mine for about $100.

None of those that you listed.
What you want to check out is the MXL V67g. This is a very good microphone for vocals and if you shop around you will find it on the net for around $89. including shipping.

I just recently got the Apex 460 tube microphone for $160. not bad for a Chinese tube ,but I would change out the tube.\

I have seen used AT3035's for a hundred bucks or so.

This is true you want to stay away from the AT 20 series and the AKG perception series these are the bottom of the barrel of both companies.....True they are good microphones but once you get something better you say to yourself.....WHY?

The MXL990 is not a bad option to start with or audio techinica 2020

The AT3035 looks like a good mic. But you can only buy them used for some reason. Do you know why they discontinued them?

Also what do y'all think of the MXL 990? It's cheap but is it good? GWYPF?

For a minute I thought that I was on ignore for I had suggested the MXL V67g and got no response. :D

Haha Sorry, the V67g looks good too.

Ok so now I'm looking at the MXL V67g, the AT3035 or i guess the AT2035, and the Sure PG27. Do you still suggest the V67g over these other ones?

Absolutely......Hands down.... with out a doubt ....no questions asked....do it now or you'll be sorry.

Do I need to continue?

Any of the AKG Perception series is a good buy.
The 120 should be good. Has Bass Roll off and PAD if I remember right.
Will probably be a bit high on the mid range but every microphone in that price range will have some colour.

there is nothing wrong with your SM57s, you can get great vocal recordings with those, but I guess it depends what you are recording. MXLs are good for the money, I got an MXL 9000 and it sounds pretty damn good on vocals and guitar, you could probably get one for like $200, if not go for the V67g, I've heard they are nice.
