Hey everybody, I am new to the world of "home" recording but have studied a bit of Music tech. I just want to see or hear anyone elses opinions on the setup I am hopefully purchasing in the next few weeks!

My set up will be

M Audio Project Mix i/o going into a new 27inch imac (base model)

Running Logic Pro with IK Multimedias Studio Bundle 2
___________

MICS

I will be buying 2 AKG C4000 B's
&
2 AKG C1000's
Possibly a C414, if budget stretchs!
Cabling: DCS Pro 10m XLR (x4)

Monitors: Not sure which monitors to get yet, didnt really want to spend more than about £250 on them!

Most of my work will be recording speech/voice overs, composing soundtracks to movies and probably a bit of recording live instruments. But my house is a terraced so I won't be doing a lot of live recording! Mainly DI stuff Apart from live vocals etc!

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks

hi there, and welcome!!

tell us more about the instruments you plan to record.

if you're work is mostly spoken word or voiceover work, i'd be inclined to recommend a dynamic like an sm7b,
and then if you're doin the odd guitar or something, maybe a pair of sdcs like rode nt5s or something more expensive if you want?

Hi, thanks for the welcome!

Mainly Acoustic Guitar and violin mainly!
I've always got a decent sound out of AKG's and C1000's can get a nice sound out of an acoustic.
I like the AKG condensers because they have the variable pick up patterns, I've never really thought about dynamics, don't know why!

Any thoughts on the monitor situation?!?

Thanks
Nick

You should check on ebay or craigs list for a used pair of Yamaha or KRK.
In fact there is nothing wrong with looking for your microphones there as well.

Hi Nick and welcome !
I notice you're in London. If you're not too far from Brent Cross, you could do worse than check out Studiospares, they're located on the North Circular. They sell the usual stuff that gets discussed on the forums, but they also make their own stuff. I got my monitors from them. They may not be earth shattering but I dig them. Whether I'd know a lame set is of course open to debate ! Their catalogue may be worth a read, certainly save you a long journey if you're across the other side of town !

Indeed. 90% of audio equipment that I buy is from eBay or craigslist. xD

Hint: To search ALL of craigslist, type "[keyword] site:craigslist.org" into Google.

Yup it doesn't get any better than that. In fact most music stores barley give you a great deal on used gear any more. :(:(:(:(
