im looking to upgrade from my laptop to a computer, and i was wondering what everyone uses, or if you built it your self. im looking at one of rain recordings computers so if anyone has comments on it please let me know

I built mine myself. No experience with Rain computers, so can't comment.

Just last week I got a custom laptop from ADK audio to serve all purposes.
17"
Intel - Core i5 520M 2.4GHz Dual Core
8GB DDR3 RAM
64 bit Windows 7 Pro
500GB 7200RPM HDD

Around £1350 but had to pay another £300 in shipping and customs.

It's absolutely fantastic, as was the help and customer service from Scott. Only 4 weeks from ordering until arrival at my doorstep, and that's coming from abroad! I highly recommend looking into ADK. :)

My laptop is a Samsung X360 ("lighter than Air") - but I'm seriously thinking that the next one will be a Macbook Pro running Winsose7 under bootcamp.

My main PC was custom-built for me.

ill probably just built one myself then, cause the cheapest rain is i believe 1300, and the imac is awesome but i dont wanna spend over $2000 on it when i can get a ton of great gear for that

You could get an iMac for around $1150, while the most expensive one is just under $2000

im using an Inta Audio barebones,
Intel core duo E7500, 2.93GHz,
32 bit wondows seven so 4GB RAM,
can more than handle the work i throw at it

I have an HP whicg works fine. I suggest whatever you get you dedicate it to music only, and do not access the internet with it. I have learned this the hard way.

I use a dual processor AMD Opteron system that is far too old, but I'm far too cheap to replace it. It cost me about 2k and is as solid as a rock. I try not to fool with rock solid. I purchased from a boutique provider that knew their shit ... not a bulk manufacturer more interested in profit.

I've got less RAM and less processing power than most, but this brings up a point.

Everything in the recording chain moves in this fashion in order of import:

Source->Mic->Preamp->Recording Device->Sound Card->Computer ...

... unless dirt crap exists in the weakest link of the chain ... and the sound will occur accordingly.

If you've dirt crap for source (the actual performance), nothing you do following will matter. If you've dirt crap for mic, recording becomes dirt crap ... and nothing that follows will matter. Noisy pre? Bad sound ... and so on and so on down the chain.

This is important advice. Learn to discern. Use your ears to know the diff.

Best,

Kev-
