It depends. There are some jobs that this guy might do that don't require clear, precise communication (ie. punk music
), and then there's some jobs that require strict, exact notes (ie. classical music etc.)That's where the mutual language is more than just lip-service.
I'm not bashing music that ignores theory. I listen to some punk, a lot of old thrash metal and death metal etc. Theory would ruin it. It's just more necessary for some styles of music than others.
Classical music wouldn't be around without theory. There's tons of theory in blues and jazz. And without those, most of the styles of music you know today wouldn't be around. You have a lot more to thank theory for than you think.

Well, again, there's only 12 notes you can use in western music. If you can't figure it out without having to do homework, maybe you should try something else.

I think you underestimate the depth that theory can get into, or the effects it can have on music.
12 notes, yes. But I'd rather have some kind of game plan, than to just sit there guessing

As you can see there's plenty of ways to do things. Just do whatever you want. Bury your head in a theory book, or plug in and play what your heart and mind tell you to play. Either way is fine. Just don't suck.
