Are these things any good?:confused: I just read about them. Seems like if you have the compatible hardware (using the EFI-X thingy) then everything's ok.

What do you think?
 
It's a Macintosh computer that is not made by Apple. Obviously if it breaks don't expect Steve Jobs to say anything other then 'I told you so'.

Let me rephrase that. With an authentic copy of OSX, is it legal? I mean the rest is just hardware, right?
 
I don't think that I would ever do it. It just seems like it would be unstable. I would just buy a used Mac if I wanted a Mac and didn't want to spend the mega$$$ for a new one. :)

There is a lot of work that goes into making it work. The companies who did it are mostly sued and shutdown. The EULA of OSX forbids doing what has to be done, and towards the end of last year a court upheld Apple's argument...most likely due to shady practices by the other party involved.

you can build one yourself (Allegedly)
I might or might not have done so a couple times, Stability can be an issue espeiailly with OS updates (hypothetically of course).
It'a challenging (in theory of course) but the pay off is if you can get it to work you can get far superior components to stock machines and the ability to customize to the nth degree for a good deal less cost

Now I'm off to find a rock to hide under so apple can't find me
 
I have no interest in it myself, but one of my tech friends built one. He did not find it too difficult, but he is a PC tech already so he had some skills. I'm not sure if he still has it or if he turned it back into a PC.

Pretty funny. Couple years ago there was a Mac TV spot that stated "The best Windows machine is a Mac".
 
I'm using one now, and I use Logic Studio. It's works great. Absolutely nothing to complain about, it is very reliable.

Funny really, any computer running windows is a windows machine, any computer running mac is a mac machine.

Think about it, a computer is just plastic, metal, circuit boards and wire, bolted together to make it a computer.

If the computer works I am happy regardless of what it is called, I use Windows machines, mac machines and even an old Atari 1040ste. If the computer works "Thank you computer God" coz at sometime they all stop working.

Putting Windows into a mac is just a more expensive way to get a windows machine ha ha.:laughings:

And I don't get spending $3000 on a Mac to run Windows? :confused:


My DIY PC has been absolutely rock solid. I'm sticking with Windows. If I could DIY a Windows laptop, I would. :D
 
I used XP on a Mac for awhile. XP was finally a stable Windows OS, and I really didn't see much advantage to running it on the Mac. Only thing I did notice is that I never froze up, and never had to reboot in the middle of something. That being said, I only used it for about 6 months, and I can honestly say that I rarely have any issues with XP on a PC. Until XP, however, Windows was a mess, and I NEVER would have considered a Windows machine as the heart of my studio.
My graphics department is starting to use more Windows, and we have fewer Macs anymore. Mac is slowly losing it's foothold in the professional production niche. Not sure what it's future is.
 
Funny my favourite windows was 2000 (I call it the forgotten windows).

2000 was very stable and it never crashed, the only reason I updated was that some hardware I bought did not have windows 2000 drivers. My 2000 machine is still running and networked to the main computer.
