Thanks Jeff, the bass is really the song, so I'm keen on keeping it.

I thought this was a forum for 'home recordings.' This is a little too good. Did you have Kevin Churko bring his studio to your house and have him stay to engineer too?

I really liked the drum sound - might be my favorite on this forum!

As far as mixing advice; I don't have any that you would need on this. There were just a few spots where I couldn't understand the vocal - but perhaps you just used some big words that I didn't get on the first listen (I'm a school teacher - not very smart).

I liked the vocal effect, but like you, I got 'dinged' for it too when I used something similar on my vocals. :(

This is well done. Please post more.

nothing about it made me cringe.

But I would have liked to hear all the frequencies more evenly represented [bass part]. And/or some volume enveloping to raise and lower it as needed, where it gets lost under a thicker mix for a while.

It's 'the song', right? Give it the same attention that you'd give to a vocal...making every vowel understandible, and evening out the peaks and vallies with compression and/or enveloping or automating faders!! MHO. It's a nice bass part. I like the way you hear the instrument.

very cool song. Well recorded. I suppose the drums could be cleaner and louder in the mix but I really like the song. It rocks hard and doesn't quit.

Although when you crank this baby up...the drums seem to sparkle more.

Thanks Maxi, glad you liked it... I can assure you, I'm very much a home-hobbiest with pretty average "pro-sumer" type gear! Lots of trial & error, dead-ends & sleepless nights. I'm working on another mix at present that hopefully will be a "vocal up" version. The drums were played by a real drummer, but the sounds are actually from XLN Audio's Addictive Drums - (I replaced them completely with samples - cymbals included).

Good advice Jeff. I have actually raised the volume level of the bass via automation during the heavier bits, because it was getting lost, but you've hit on something for me to consider in my next mix. Thanks

Uhh, this is not what I expect to hear when I click on a 1st post by a "newbie". It's way too good. Didn't see that coming. Please post some more.

Thanks for listening, glad you liked it... You have a GREAT screen name BTW -wish I'd thought of that!
Yes, I'm new to this forum. I've been dabbling in home recording since the days of cassette 4 tracks (my claim to analogue fame!), but only got serious about trying to get somewhere near professional results in the last 3 years or so - a HUGE learning curve & quite a bit of money too... I'm sure everyone on here knows what I'm talking about!

Thanks Mick - glad you enjoyed it.

One opinion I got from another forum was that the bass during the verses was too busy & distracted fromt the lead vocal... Any thoughts?

Sorry man, been away for a few days and didn't see your question.

No, I don't think the bass during the verses interferes at all. It sets a groove. Although there is no cohesive loss between the verses and the chorus, the bass between the two sections draws on two different styles...in the verses kinda funky groove oriented, and in the chorus more straight rock. I can't imagine a less busy bass part for the verses....not as an improvement anyway.

Okay, having said that, and now that you have me concentrating on the bass...

The middle part. starting at about 2:40, maybe the bass could stand to be a bit more sparse(less busy). The guitar kind of takes over the funky groove thing....but I think overall the section is supposed to be a drop off point...a respite of sorts. But even at that, the bass isn't really distracting.

Good stuff overall...I don't see any reason to change anything.

Looks like we've been playing "post tag", I just discovered your post... I haven't changed any of the actual arrangement, but I have posted a new mix here: http://www.4shared.com/audio/h2v0FwSJ/Bulldozer_Mix_5__320_.html

Thanks for the listens & comments.
