Just bought a fostex b16 reel to reel, need a mixer, Someone on another thread reccomended that I NOT get the behringer 12 track mixer I had in mind, anybody have any advice?

I just let a beautiful vintage 8 track mixer go on ebay couple days ago as it was pick up only, other side of the country.

So with most things on ebay being pick up only, its hard to come accross any vintage mixers, are there any modern mixers I should consider?

I use a Yamaha MG16. Vintage it is not, but it was relatively inexpensive and considerably better than the Behringer thing I was using before.

I am kind of curious why you're thinking of using an 8 or 12 track mixing desk with a 16-track tape machine, though - were you just going to waste the extra tracks? Or are you looking at using two mixing desks together?
 
Mixer inputs are not called 'tracks'. Those are on your tape machine. Channels are what a mixer has. You should have at least as many channels as you have tracks. More is better.

Depending upon your routing options, any channel can be routed to any track on the machine.

Direct outs are preferable, but an insert can be used as well to get signal to the machine. The Behringer mixer you previously chose is not up to the task of analog multi-track recording. Find a dedicated recording console. On the cheap end the TASCAM M-1516, M-24XX and M-26xx series are good starter consoles for a 16 track rig. Some of the earlier Yamaha desks are good too.

Even a live 32 channel console can be used if it has inserts on at least 16 channels. In that case you would use it as a split console using the insert outs to the machine and then using the other 16 channels as inputs from the machine to monitor and mix with.
 
I've heard both good and bad things about behringer. I guess if that's all you can get in your area then go for it. You can resell it if you don't like it.
