Have A Little Faith In Me - cover

Reapers a pretty good free program. I know quite a few guys using that one. Seems everyone likes it once the brain gets around it. A bit heavy on the verb but sounding pretty good. I like your vocals. Have you tried using delay on the vocals rather than verb?

Dave

I could give that a shot. I was looking for a live sound, as if you were in the room.

Maybe on the delay...something like a real quick slap back but with a low volume? Is that what you mean?

Oh, and thanks on the vocals.
The instrumentation is pretty mundane, but I was basing it on the piano only version.

Yep. I know one vocalist who mainly uses delay for a similar effect of a room verb. It works good and I've been trying it more. You have to experiment. Maybe both but sparingly on the verb.

I get what you're saying.
I'll see if I can't make something good of your suggestion, Dave. Might be a day or two, though. Just got my MF order...new strings and a version of EZ Drummer. Might be busy for a couple of days with that one. :)

How did the bass sound to you? Absent, adequate, or overbearing?

Cool. I have EZ and use it often for composing. It's perfectly fine for a final drum sound as well. I usually try to dig up a real drummer for my final songs just because I like the human touch that I can't get from midi. I could but it's time consuming. Ok, listened a couple more times. The bass is there but yet it's absent. Mainly from my ears because of the tone. Personally I would like to hear a fatter sounding bass. Something with a bit more body to it. Especially since it's just guitar and bass. The bass is almost similar in tone as the guitar. If the bass is played well and has some nice little runs I think it could stand on it's own and not be buried with the guitar tone and frequency. The vocals are fantastic. Too much verb as I said because you don't need that much. When the vocals are bad then heavy verb helps to make them sound a bit better but since your vocals are really good you don't need to muddy them up. If it were my vocals I'd have twice the verb and layers of vocals on top. LOL The other part that I wasn't 100% on is when you really got loud and expressive with the vocals. It's too much. Too expresive and too loud. Be expressive without being overpowering. :) again JMHO.

Dave

I think I just realized that there is reverb applied to both the vocals and the final mix. I need to go in and remove the vocal reverb treatment. That would probably help a bit.

When it gets loud and expressive...well, even with mic control and proper distancing I'm still trying to find that sweet spot. I have a limiter on there. Maybe I should see what I could do about compressing it a bit more. I don't want to suck the life out of it.

Seems like maybe I could knock some of the bottom end off the guitars...maybe that could give the bass it's own space to occupy, yes?

Now I'm so danged curious, I'm going to HAVE to mess with this before I open the EZ Drummer package. :P

It's easy to say do this or that but it's quite different when your mixing. It's different when your actually mixing and listening to the song over and over a zillion times. Maybe the bass needs more bottom. Maybe the guitars need less. Just gotta play to get that nice balance. Once you open up EZ you will be occupied with that I'm sure. Tons of fun and can sure inspire tunes. :)

Thanks, Dave.

I'll post here again with the next mix.

Sounds good Jim. I like some John Hiatt on occasion.

You're a lot cleaner in the vocal in fact you sound like Brooks and Dunn more
than Hiatt. I don't know which one of em sings.

Not crazy about the room ambiance but that's just a personal observation.

Nice job.

Thank you, Manslick.

I think removing the reverb attached to the vocal track will help the overall recording sound natural. Gonna give that try later and re-post.

Acoustic sounds nice. I'm not liking the verby vocals, especially when you start screaming. Yeah, it sounds like we're in the room - a big, boxy, empty, gymnasium type room.

+1 on the vocal delay.

I find that a quick delay on vocals gives a much cleaner spacial effect. Try it. DL the kjaerhus classic delay. It's free and it's my go to delay. I use it literally all the time. Very easy to use, very adjustable, and you can sync it to the tempo of the song if you used a click.

Thanks, Greg.

I'm using the Kjaerhus free plug ins.
User friendly, and they don't sound bad at all.
I'm using their EQ (mic'ed guitar, bass track), delay (vocal), and reverb (vocal).

I also took advantage of audiomidi.com's current "No-Brainer" deal and bought the British Bundle. I'm using the compressor on both guitar tracks and the vocal. I ended up using the compressor and EQ along with the Kjaerhus reverb on the main buss.

So, after some EQing and compression on the vocal to reign it in, I'll ditch the reverb on that track and give it some space with a slight delay. I'll upload that one when I finish.

Thanks again, y'all.

Vocals are sounding much better. Overall mix is sounding much better. Good stuff!!

I dropped some of the bottom end off of the guitars and tried to find a frequency on the bass that would bring it's overall presence out more in the mix. It feels like I took too much from the acoustic, though.

Yeah. The bass isn't very present. VERY soft sounding bass. Almost sounds like an upright?

The acoustic sounds OK. I think replaying the bass would be the ticket or live with the soft bass. Apples and oranges
