I think ukes would be great starter instruments for schools,people who have a hard time fretting initially and people who want a quality instrument but don't want to lay out guitar type of cash.It translates great to guitar and recorded a lot of people(laymen) don't even know the difference.

The small size is a plus too.

And to totally derail this thread,if acoustic strings are to hard on you,look at a ukulele,great for building your sense of rhythm,easy on the hands and a lot cheaper than a guitar.

When I was 7 yo and my big brother went off to juvee...I inherited his tedesco del ray...it was years before I got my first acoustic...and Id have fell for the fender on the headstock thing too since I wanted a strat anyhow.

The best advice you can get here is look for the used deals and forget about brand names...strum it first...if it sounds dead, dont buy it...check it for a straight neck...thats important.

I've built ukes for my kids and one of them has actually taken the time to invest some effort in it. 6 years old and he can strum a few chords and have a bit of fun with it.

Did that last time this idiot went off on one. A a result of his vulgarity, ignorance and poor judgement he was banned for a short while. Taking it to the cave obviously didn't work.
