mic clipping on 003Rack

New to PT and have been working with my 003 rack for a couple weeks now. When connecting XLR (sm57) mic to any input 1-4 on the 003R I use the Input gain nob to preamp the signal prior to recording... good for micing guitar amp. However for vocals the signal is clipping even with the 003R gain turned all the way down. I can easily get around this by using my offboard preamp but it seems like I must be doing something wrong to not be able to simply input an sm57 via xlr directly into In's 1-4 on the 003 and record vocals. I searched the posts and did not see this topic which really leads me to believe I am missing something.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you might need a pop filter. Are you using one? When recording vocals you should always use one or else the air that is created when pronouncing B's P's hits the mic and makes a loud popping noise. Otherwise I cannot imagine why it would be doing this with vocals and not guitar.

Try using the pad on the 003 inputs, that should knock your input down by about 15dB

I am not using a pop filter, I was just trying to record rehearsal... Not serious recording. The vocal levels were peaking to a point that I do not think a pop filter would have solved it although I will try it next week. I was looking for a pad to roll back the signal a little on the 003R but could not find it, inputs 1-4 only have a phantom power button that I could find and there seems to me nothing about this in the documentation. Where is the pad button? My Allen Heath analog board has them and I know exactly what you are talking about but do not know where to find the pad button for Inputs 1-4 on the 003Rack.

Thanks in advance.

yeah, there's no pad on the 003
You're actually clipping on the channel fader, yes? Not just hearing distortion...but you actually SEE red lights turning on in PT? With a dynamic mic like the 57 and the 003 XLR mic input turned all the way down...you shouldn't be clipping. Even if you were screaming into the mic, most likely you wouldn't be seeing red lights.

And there's no plugins on your track that could be amplifying the signal?

I'm having some of the same issues on my PT Mbox. A mic to a pre-amp(DMP-3), then to the inbox. All gains turned down and I still get a hugely distorted and clipped signal. But only on the vocals. Guitars were no problem. Anyone have any suggestions on this one? Am I totally missing something simple?

What inputs on the mbox are you going to?

There's a pad on the mbox, press it in. Leave the gains down. And try gaining down on the preamp, or even pressing in the hi/lo switch.
