I just think it's silly when people are dicks or militant about it either way. It's like, what you trying to prove? What are you afraid of?

Like dinty said, there are many fine examples of both types of player. When people like Gerg or EZ get all up in arms and start insulting people because they know more than the notes on the neck, I just have to laugh. Same goes for when people call others shitty players because they don't know theory. It's actually very depressing to me that musicians feel the need to do that.

i wasn't insulting anyone. the question was:
But why would you want to? it's so much easier with a map!

my response stands. learning music theory is NOT the same as buying a map. it takes years to develop. during the years that it takes to learn it, i was playing in bands.

i don't care one way or the other if you know it or not. good for you if you do.

I agree, that is a problem with these forums, it turns some people into arrogant, rude, close-minded know-it-alls.

I think it's the internet in general - the anonymity and safe distance. I'm positive that Gerg wouldn't be as much of a dick in person to everyone he meets in person.

It's amazing though. Occasionally I'll play chess online, for example, and you wouldn't believe how pissed people get when they lose! They're spatting off all kinds of crap that they would never say in person!

You'd be wrong. I'll buttfuck you to death.

I was actually referring more to the comments like these:

yeah, that definitely ain't me. i don't care what you band dorks do. (EZ)

I hate theory people and hope they all die. (Greg)

The whole Greg vs. Chamelious thing, which Greg started right here:

I was born without talent, rhythm or an ear for music. I'm no Vai, but i'd hope i'm more than "serviceable". (Chamelious)

We can tell (Greg)

band geek defends his earlier position. (EZ)
still too geeky for my liking. (EZ)

So basically theory is just a lazy mans formula for making music that fits a template. Got it.
Aren't your ears supposed to tell you what works? (Greg)

There's only 12 notes to choose from. If you can't just figure it out from there, find a new hobby. (Greg)

whatever. i don't care. you dorks keep practicing your scales and modes and i'll keep writing songs and rocking out. (EZ)

What the hell does practicing a scale do for you anyway? Anyone can sit and play a scale. (Greg)
apparently the band geeks think it'll make you write a string of hit songs and get chicks. (EZ)

So, if we extrapolate this further, we can deduce that theory = gay. (Greg)

I had no idea you played math metal. Your love of needless theory all makes perfect sense now. (Greg)

i'm into not spending time on theory, like the other guys that rock. (EZ)

I've already spent too much time copying this stuff (all from this thread), so I'll stop there, though I'm sure there are plenty more nuggets in there. There are probably more from Greg, but that's a given.

Sounds like fun! Bring a camera please, I'd love to see a real snuff film some time.

Anyway. Returning slightly to the pre-flaming part of the topic, in response to the statement that people have rhythm or they don't: everyone develops a sense of rhythm and timing, but it's like learning a language. Get familiar with it at an early age and it'll stick with you for the rest of your life; start learning when your brain has stopped its natural growth process and it's a bitch to get anything to stick!

Lol @ this homo copying and pasting all the good parts of this thread.

You can find out for yourself this october at westfest.

Thanks but I think I'll pass. I really have no desire to meet someone who acts like a 2nd grade school yard bully on a home recording internet forum.

And I have no desire to meet pussified, overly-sensitive faggots that can't mind their own business, but I'm always willing to make exceptions.

same kinda guy that takes 5 of the best years of his life learning theory. what a dork.

Ok .... ??????

Again ... what do you get from this? What are you trying to prove? Why try and hurt people? What's the point?

lol ... man ... whatever ... I've wasted enough time already.

You know what? You fit all the signs of a closet homosexual, and I'm almost certain you are. And if you're gay, that's no big deal. The fact that you can't admit it though is pathetic.

edit: just this one last bit of whining.

Thanks, I'll be sure to let my wife know.

Thanks, I'll be sure to let my wife know.

Since when is marriage proof? I said "closet." One of my wife's friends is a gay guy, and he knows plenty of married men that frequent the gay clubs.

I never denied it, dummy. I said I'd let her know. I'm gay and I'm proud.
