This is A Patch of Ground. It's about the lack of land available for subsistence farming in the Philippines during the Marcos regime.
I opted for a 320 MP3 at 1st but Windows Movie maker had a few problems with that. After trying a few versions out I discovered that WMM could handle a 224 MP3 without the problems of any higher quality ones. I had tried wav. files previously but they really drove the program into crash mode.
The final vid. was rendered to FLV before being uploaded but, as I was using super I was able to select a higher grade of audio for that conversion than the default.
All in all an experiment in audio quality. The majority of the song was recorded to 4 track portastudio (Yamaha MT100) with the drums & mixing/enhancements being added in Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.3. (Thanks to RAMI for the excellent drumming).
Here's the YTub link if you want to watch it larger & in HQ etc:

Great video Ray - the images compliment the lyrics throughout. There's always an interesting story in your tunes and the vid just enhances that. The sound quality is pretty good too...:D:cool::D

Looks and sounds good Ray. I like the dancers in the intro. More of them please....unless they are lady-boys. :D

it all works...the videos great, matches the song well, the quality seems goods as well Ray, bang on...and I really enjoyed the subject material...I wish the vocals were up a little as I enjoyed the lyrics and I think its important that listeners can gear everything youre saying in a song with a message..

good job all round dude! :)

Gerry,
Thanks mate. I'm experimenting with quality. Given that the vox, flute, bass & guitars were recorded to 4 track cassette (all recorded in about '87) it was probably the wrong song to pick. This track was from our South East Asian obsession - but there was so much going on at the time & it's all so close to home that we couldn't avoid it.
Greg,
According to the source they aren't ladyboys but then again I didn't look that closely - & I'm afraid to look now you're brought it to my attention. Thanks for the compliment.
kcearl,
Thanks! I struggle with vocal levels - personally I like 'em buried, Terry - the singer, quite naturally, prefers the story to be clear. The levels seem to have suffered a bit in the many conversions necessary to get the vid up (tape -> DAW -> wav. -> 224 MP3 -> WMV -> FLV -> Utub converter)
You're very kind in your appraisal - ta!

Man, your link isn't outsourced so I have to listen a little, then type comments, then go back and listen more. I will so from the intro, awesome flute tone/melody. I think it should be blended on the last line into the start of the vocals better, though. That is a mixing/playing combination comment. Let me reload and I'll listen to the next part. Nice playin', man.

Not a bad job of encoding at all; sounds like YouTube left it largely alone. Very cool tune... Well-reworked hybrid of old and new recordings. Excellent balancing act there. Windows Movie Maker is friendly, but VERY unstable, as you've discovered. I use it largely as a title generator, but not much else...

Back in control of my puter, sorry. When I said blended in the beginning it was more of a production than mixing suggestion, which would've been to extend the last flute note of the "riff" for a whole measure into the vocal measure and fade it to blend with the start of the vocals. Vocals are great, you've got a short delay on them and then what seems like a small room reverb, unless that was in tracking, that sets them unique.

I really dig the sound of the toms. I can't think of anything more.

Intresting in many ways.

as I am a farm owner in the Philippines:D

I bought 0,5 hectars of land this summer for my family.

Cool vid, I recognize a filipino GoGO bar anytime:D

Marcos sure did a number on em, and kudos on the shoe fetish Queen Ismelda.

Just visiting his birthtown Ilocos Norte, tells you how egoistic this man was.

I dig the tune, spacy.

I'd like to have the vocals a bit more up as I dig your lyrics and would like to hear em clearer:cool:

Cool vid:)

Seeker,
Thanks for the observations. WE did plan on having an overlap BUT as Terry did the vocals & flute live to tape (I hadn't learnt about drop in at this stage) he had to put the thing down & start singing. It's naturalroom verb then something at thefinal mix stage on the vox - we didn't have effects back then either. - Oh, I just remembered we double mic'd the vocal so that it came out of a Peavey amp into the room to be captured as both in the room by the main mic.
The toms, in fact all the percussion, comes from a Roland TR505 - considered a great door stop by those in the know - but it's all I have, (& I've had since new in about '87 or so).
Llarion,
Ta matey. Since spending a bit of time looking & thinking I've learnt a bit more about how the progs work (usually I just opt for presets on everything). Unstable is a generous term: I've searche forums everywhere to work out how to get it sorted but there are only semi successful workarounds no fixes. MSoft should do the right thing & fix it.
Nakatira,
Such a wonderful album mate - it gets played a couple of times a week! Thanks Mr THE MAN. Landholder eh? Rather a different world from home isn't it! Thanks for your kind comments. Yeah, the consensus is for more vox.
