My first stupid mic question in years!

Good $200 choices for a mic suited to recording guitar amp AND kick drum.

Gonna close mic a 2X12 marshall combo. Is there a mic that will serve double-duty for micing a kick drum too, or is this just askin' too much?

IMO...good sir... I don't think you're gonna find one that does both jobs well. A 57 will do both in a pinch but I don't think you'd like it much. I was thinkin maybe the SM7 might do better but I've never played around with one and it's not 200 bones.

But maybe some more knowledgeable dudes will chime in here.

yes a SM7 as mentioned by dogbreath is an great choice for vocals and I have done some kick with it but I have better goto mics for that, so you can't go wrong with the SM7.

Its going to cost a bit more than $200. new so look for one used - hard to find that way cause the people who have one will probably be buried with it to be used in the next world!

I'd chuck in the suggestion of an MD421. Would be a bit over $200 to buy new, but there are plenty of used ones floating around on ebay and the like for less.

The 421 is my "go-to" mic for guitar cabs, and I think it would make a reasonable job on a kick as well.

My first thought was the 421, but I've used an RE20 in both these roles with good results. The PL20 was another version (same mic, different color) that you occasionally see sold cheaper.

Also a condenser with a built in pad is another option. You can use a condenser as a kick mic, even inside the kick, but you'll want to use a pop screen with it. Maybe an Oktava MK219, or other not-too-bright LDC?

I havent heard a kick mic beat the MD421...except for the Beyer M88.

True but when the 421 was first conceived they had vocals in mind hence the frequency/attenuation switch V.....M "vocal to music" I think and all the 5(?) clicks in between - kinda cool - not to mention the other high profile uses the 421 has to offer like all over the horn section sax/bone/trumpet, other drum usage the infamous go to mic for the toms, the list goes on and on.

I'll agree with Big Kenny you'll probably get a lot more mileage out of a 421 and at used prices on ebay and such you can get a hand full of them for $200. maybe as many as 4 of them in a package deal ok maybe a little more than $200. but not much more and believe me they will all come in handy.

Wasn't the 421 originally intended as an in-shot tv presenter/broadcast type mic, then was found to be good in other applications? Hence the god-awful clip, as it was designed to be held on the end of a boom pointing up at the presenter and gravity would play its bit at keeping it in place. Nowadays its a few wraps of tape that keeps it in place

Have you tried the beta 52 in conjunction with the beta 91? some people swear by it!

I kinda like the senn. 602 or 902 on kick have you tried them?

You see I'm always torn I own a sound company and a recording studio some mics work great live but in the studio not so good and visa-versa or have completely different uses at times its hard to keep it all straight.

The only time I used a beyer M88 was live the drummer had it with him, tried it and liked it good beater click with good low end drum resonances ever sense I've been looking for a good one used.

I was just going to ask about the Beta 52. I have gone through all kinds of kick mics and I get a great tone out of the Beta 52 with no EQ. Never got that from an MD421. Maybe an AKG D12, but not a 421.

+1 RE20, I've been looking to get one for months but haven't made the financial leap, It is a bit over 200 though...
