Working on this song, needs a bass line and percussion. What type of percussion? We're thinking simple like a cajon. Any suggestions? Also are the levels OK?

Actually the cajon we have has a snare in it, so it has a bass side and a snare side. Can sound good if mic'd correctly.Sounds good GZ...the vocals are very tight. Actually the whole performance is. Piano sounds very nice.
The whole thing sounds a lot more complete than I would've expected given the lack of percussion and bass, but I think it could really come to life with those additions.
Um, isn't cajon spanish for testicle? If so, I don't recommend that at all.
Actually, I just googled it and learned that it is the most widely used afro-peruvian instrument in the 20th century...still probably not my first choice.
A nice laid back kick/snare with shaker and/or tambourine maybe...I dunno...sounds very well done thus far.![]()
Not me singing, I just mixed this. My son does the singing and playing. Yeah, the vocal is borderline sibilant, but I don't really want to change it at this point. Thanks for the feedback.Wow. You sound way younger than your age.
Like the sound of the guitar, I'm jealous. Really nice. I like all kinds of music, but lately I've been doing alot of this type of minmilistic instrumentation. I like the idea of songs being stripped down to nothing and still being effective. I'm not surprised that this works so well. Voices sound good. Do I hear the occasional pfff? Not sure. Wish I could harmonize this good. Well done![]()
Thanks, appreciate you taking the time to listenThe song is top notch - right on pitch vocally and super playing on the instruments.... I'd go for drums and bass which will require a bunch of remixing...
I wish I had vocal talent too. Maybe then I'd do a duet with my son. Hadn't thought of leaving it the way it is, but I'll consider it. Maybe I'll post an A/B with and without. Thanks for the feedback.weird but I wouldn't add anything to it...I really liked it as is...well performed, well written, great voice..a little sibilance but not enough to retrack or anything, man I wish I had half your vocal talent
sounded complete to me as is..good job
Thanks for the feedback. Sorry to hear you feel that way. That's really not the reaction we hope to invoke with our songs....You sound very much like any of the number of guys named Chris doing Cristian contemporary music these days...
Matt, Thanks for some great feedback. The best part of your post bolded. Although we don't really have a bass player, we added some canned drum tracks and recorded some bass last night. It still sounds better without it.This is a top notch vocal performance, suits the song very well.
Only thing is, I think I hear some 'plosives getting by the pop filter--which is a shame because the effect is akin to a big dent on an otherwise shiny and pristine Corvette. The most egregious one is probably just before the midpoint of the song, and I think the singer is saying "commander declares" or something similar.
Personally, I think the minimalist instrumentation sounds good as it is and nothing more is needed.
When I tried to imagine percussion, I was hearing very simple things like light bongos or maybe even "home made" sounds like tapping the back of an acoustic guitar or even hitting a suitcase with a drumstick.
The only thing I'd urge you to do is not get it set in your head that the song needs other instruments. No harm in giving it a try, but be brutally honest with yourself on whether or not it adds anything. If not, kill it.
Good stuff
