So....back to today....:D
Here's my new heavy ballad. First mix, so definitely not the last.
My biggest problem: the squeaks of the acoustic. I've tried to avoid them or dilute them but they still sound like birds in springtime...with the pattern I'm playing, I just have to slide. Anyway I'll wait for your comments, as always.

Thanx to all of you for any comment!

Joey :):)

Acoustic squeaks give me chills. It's not your fault - any song with acoustic squeaks does that to me. It's like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Once it gets rockin, it sounds really good. Love the kick for this song. The snare has a nice compressed pop to it too. Guitars sound fantastic.

The ride is a little loud during that breakdown after the solo. Sounds forced. Drop it back into the mix some. You'll still be able to hear it. My only other drum nit is the kit seems a little too seperated. It doesn't seem to have a strong overhead presence glueing it all together. It's close though. I don't know if your drum program allows bleed between the pieces, but if it does, dial it up a hair to get the kit sounding more like a kit and less like a bunch of individual pieces. That's me really nitpicking it though. Most non-drummers probably would never notice it. Overall, for a first mix, this is damn good. :)

Thanx Greg, I'll check that kit and the ride again...(nice ride, ain't it?:D). Battery has the bleed feature.
I just don't know what I should do about those squeaks, they really are horrible. I might have to replay that part but it'll have to be a different pattern which avoids sliding. Appreciate your opinion!
:)

I´m far from home and listening on "ultra-mega-hyper-tyny" speakers (cannot call it speakers):D,
then I´m not hearing almost nothing below 300hz.
Doesn´t matter. The "information" I have it´s great.Fantastic performance, nice acoustic, SUPERB arrangement, vocals rocks, Great solo tone,....
One of best songs (if not the best) I listened from you.Hope everything It´s ok in the lows (I´m sure it is).

Great, really great composition.:cool::cool::cool:

Thanx Ciro, glad you like it. Probably gonna be the only ballad on my next CD.
And I've tried to practice some guitar playing lately....;)

That was a great song! It sounded like semi country Alice in Chains... The drums are the only thing I didn't really like. They sound fake. Oh well, I know what it's like not to have resources.

:)

Yep, can't beat a real drummer, but unfortunately I can't play them....:o
Love AIC comparisons, 'cos they really had their own style.;)
Thanx for the nice comments!

great...all of it, tip top stuff me old sunshine..

squeeks are a pain, i use d'addarios and they seem far quieter than most (on all my acoustic rock songs lol)

drums sounded great for Battery..Im impressed

vocals were terrible, barely a note in tune hehe

overall mix is great..gold star ;)

Damn....d'you know of a good vocal coach?:(:D
The strings on my 6 and 12 strings are new Martins, but there's no way I can avoid squeaks with the pattern I'm playing. Yep, Battery is the best for me, I've tried Addictive drums and it didn't work for me, because you have to use its own samples and I found it quite limited, even if looks better than Battery. I've got loads of samples I downloaded from the net for Battery (and some samples from a great drummer....;)) and it's got a great humanize function.
Always appreciate your comments, my Tartan bro!;)

lemme know if there's ever any samples needed..I have tonnes...606, 707, 808, 909 ;)

The squeaks are near impossible to get rid of once they are recorded. I've tried hardware and software de-essers, automated EQ, automated narrow band compression, and it all just ends up sounding worse. We had horrible trouble with Elixir polyweb strings. The squeaks were unbearable. Then we tried some d'Addario strings and the squeaks are still there, just much more tolerable. You might try that. Also, some talc on your fingers can help cut down the squeaks. Nice job on the recording.

Great little tune Joe.

Lots of dynamics...pretty awesome.

Mix sounds great as well.

What did you use to record guitars...just wondering.

Thanx GZ!
KC already mentioned the D'Addarios, maybe that's worth worth a try. Otherwise I might try to change the pattern I'm playing.

Thanx, man!
The guitars are recorded with an SM57, about 4" off-axis from the grill. My amp is a VOX AD30 modeller and for this one I connected it to a 65 Watt bass amp with a 12" speaker and a 5-band EQ. It made the guitars sound bigger.
:)

Joey - very, very cool except for the squeaks - I'm in the can't cope zone with Greg - I know purists love them but they spoil the effect for me.
I've had some success tuning the De esser in the fishfillets suite (spit fish?) to the main freq - that & automatic the fader a fair bit.
The electric guitars are monsters - hot solo too.
I quite like the drums but then again I just program & OD with my TR505 so I have no taste at all - I rely on the generosity of folk like the terrifying texans & the crazy canadian to lay down superb tracks occasionally.
