Am I delusional? - Rock artist needs advice

Thanks for the advice, I do like that Smashing Pumpkins signature lead sound, though I'll have to do some research to find it since it's pretty unique. I've gotten a lot of advice on shutting off the auto-tune, but as many times as I redo the vox they never sound as good (I'd rather not be the one singing these in the first place). I should definitely consider toning it down a bit though.

Thanks, it's "...if your gut sucks you won't go anywhere (w/ anywhere for me just being respect/appreciation)" part that I wanted to get get unbiased opinions on, not b/c I'll stop playing, but I would spend more time on other potential talents. But it sounds like w/ some work I'm doing fine!

You're deluded if you think you're going to be a millionaire. You're deluded if you think you can make a living out of it. You're deluded if you hope Mspace is the best showcase for your music (try soundclick, box, lightning mp3 etc), you're deluded if you hope some babe'll fall at your feet because you wrote a song (deluded but in this case quite naturally so). You're deluded if you think perfect strangers are going to listen for 6 minutes +.
BUT
The 1st song is pretty good - needs some work - esp evening out the bass & things sound a little thin even for m/space - but the song & performance are both fine.
Did you enjoy the process? Did going through the process address some need/desire/yearning? Did the babe fall at your feet? If Y is the answer to any of these questions then CONTINUE.
On that basis - welcome to the roundabout - magic or otherwise. Write, record, put it up fopr comment, take heed, rework it, promote it, enjoy yourself & KEEP MAKING MUSIC.

Thanks, rayc. Making some sort of living creating music would be nice since I'm happiest when making music, even if it meant selling my ideas. The catch-22 is that I don't have the time to put together the stuff I think I'm capable of creating that could provide any income (I'm obviously not alone on this). I don't care so much about the other stuff. The myspace is just temporary housing until I have a few songs and an idea of my rate of output. Thanks for the ideas of what to do with the song and where to put it when I'm done.

I make a living at it so it's possible.
However, without having hit records it can be a struggle. I'm about as good a 'live' player as it gets and I work constantly ..... 4-6 gigs a week.
But musicians basically get paid the same as they did 40 years ago and it's not really enough.
I do better than most but if wifey didn't have a good job I wouldn't have very much and certainly no retirement.
But ....... gotta do what I gotta do so I play on.

charles bukowski said no matter what you do, some people will love it, some people will hate it and the vast majority will not care about it either way.

Lt Bob,
To my mind you're a gigging musician who HR's on the side & you do both with enthusiasm, love & pragmatism.
A newcomer who only gets into the HR side of things & thinks it will become their sole income would have to be delusional - they may end up doing it & having a brilliant career but it is an aspiration that is almost unachievable & even then would take 100% effort which, currently, isn't available for the OP - or at least that's the inference I take from his writing.
Delsuions are good, mind, so long as they don't tear down the parts of reality that support them.

You're right, of course. I sometimes forget that this is primarily a HR site and it's true, I gig first and HR as a sideline.

Yeah, it'd be pretty near impossible to make a living at recording.
Not to discourage anyone from doing what they want ........ life isn't just about money.
But studios are folding left and right so it's gonna be hard for a newcomer to get a decent share of whatever money7's left in the bizness.

I feel bad writing such a despairing initial post because I am extremely lucky to be able to do two things I love, my non-music job and music. But they definitely conflict since if I focused on the non-music job I could really do some amazing things. The reason I'd love to get more time to create music is because I have all of these ideas and lo-fi recordings of what I think are great ideas and at the rate I'm going most will never be true representations of what I hear in my head. It's something I've been doing my whole life so I figured I must have some indescribable expertise that is worth utilizing. I can't describe why it matters that others think my songs are good, but for some reason it does. I would never stop writing even if my songs only sounded good to me, but I guess I feel that what I do in life should be of value to the rest of the world so I can say I did some productive. If my music isn't of value to anyone else, I should at least commit more time to things that do make some sort of difference.

But the response here has helped trigger me to work on a new philosophy towards my musical aspirations that I hope will be reflected in the quality of the music. Like I said, stardom was never really the point (I'm not that delusional), but making some money would be a means to the end of being able to create better songs.

And thank God for the digital age, since I'd be playing these songs for people on a My First Sony like I did as a kid.

i'm sorry but i'm going to have to disagree with him being deluded if he thinks he's going to be a millionaire or make a living out of making music. it could happen and who's anyone here to tell him otherwise?

first off, you are talented. i'm not trying to be nice or lying to you in any way, your songs are probably some of the best concepts i've heard from independent artists up to this day (locally and online).

do the songs need work? yeah they do. some mixing and volume fixes and you'd have yourself some really good songs. specially if these are your first, you do have a future in this.

don't let anyone tell you not to think you'll become famous or make a living out of it ... never. the more inspired and determined you are, the more likely you'll make it. whether you get signed or make a modest amount of money by selling your songs online ... it doesn't matter. think big, dream big.

a personal advice i'd give you (related to not getting the reaction you're hoping for) is to constantly ask a family member or close friend to give you his opinion while you're still producing/mixing/recording the song. for example, i constantly send my g/f songs before i publish them and act according to her reactions and go off what she liked most or thought was catchy. why? because people not involved with music production are the target audience. they are the people that buy the music, the consumers. they dont listen to the songs the same way we do, they listen to them from an enjoyable kind of perspective. we hear and look at songs differently. so this is why it's good to get the opinion from people who're not related to music production/recording.

last night i sent my g/f and song ... and believe it or not she loved the simplest part of the song. i had written verses that were clustered up with words... for example:

"im here blah blah blah blah blah blah bloh
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah bloh"

but she was just giving me okays and "cool" through the song. then she went "wow that was awesome".. and it was the simplest lyrical structure i had written. two three words per verse.

so what i've learned through this years is...

KEEP IT SIMPLE! express what you want to in a simple way. you can write very good lyrics but do it with words people commonly use and verse people find easy to sing along to. AAAANNNDDD ... make your stories or messages relate somehow to popular situations that happen in real life (for example: breakups, sick of being stepped on, sick of backstabbers, feeling helpless, feeling lonely, feeling happy, feeling like you want to party)... song people will use! because at the end of the day they'll be spending money on songs they'll listen to and can relate to. so make your situations more general so its easier for people to relate to them, not so specific.

i could go on about everything else but i think i've typed a lot already so i'm going to stop. good luck! :)

are you really 20 years old? life and career advice should never be taken from someone your age. i've found that their decision making skills are horrible.

Yeah...that may be true for the most part, but you know, I miss the days of being "young and stupid" (and I don't say that in bad way).

See...there's something magical about having crazy dreams and none of the logic/wisdom that comes with age to stop you from pushing forward with those dreams!!!

We get older and smarter and more experienced, and then we start looking at everything with a certain skepticism and caution. Stuff becomes calculated with a big concern about failure and wasted efforts, or even worse, wasted money. But when you are young, you don't burden yourself with all that baggage...you just go with your imagination and you chase after your dreams with a blind innocence and great expectation.
I wish you could bottle that kind of carefree and positive attitude and perspective.

No matter how much logic tells you not reach too far...I think you still have to believe that you can and that you should...otherwise it all becomes almost pointless.
