O Holy Night

Very nice and as always, you can sing. :)

I know I've said this before, but I still think you are using too much compression on your voice. One problem area is the beginning of some phrases that start with hard consonants sounds. Two examples are at 1:51 and 2:04, the beginning of the lines start with "Tr' and "Ch"; they come off very harsh.

I enjoyed the arangement and performances. Are you doing all your own backing vocals?? It 'd be nice to have some female voice helping out. You should ask Life Lyrics, I bet she could complement this song beautifully.

Thanks for sharing.

Ah....that vibrato and the tonality....every note perfectly hit.....awesome!
It's hard for me to think about the technical stuff with a performance like this.
Amazing is the only thing I can say. Your voice is a great gift, Jon, be proud of it and let the world hear it.

Joey :):):):):)

I thought you did pop stuff??

perfectly performed and recorded...even philistines like myself can appreciate your talent :)

You have a very nice voice.

Dare I say it? Josh Groban-ish? He's got an great voice, so that's a compliment:)

My nit's with the mix is this, the gate on the vocal is set way to fast. You can hear the vocals get sucked down into a worm hole and cut-off when you finish a word, and when you start, it crashes into some of the words after you've already started the pronunciation. It's ruining the track. There's also some pretty harsh ss's going on. Those need to be tamed. Also, a tad too much reverb. All these things put together make for an unnatural sound to a very nice performance.

The instruments sound very good. Work on tweaking the vocal track to make it sound smooth and natural.

Thanks a lot for all the kind replies! I'm a Josh Groban fan, so thank you :D

So, all I have to do is fix the gate a little and reduce some of the sibilance? I'll fix it tonight and re-post.

No need to cover the sibilance, and gating; everyone caught that... You have a truly wonderful voice... If I had a nit at all, it's more about placement. The backing track has a mellower, more organic patina; it's smooth and warm, if a little wuffly at the very bottom. The lead vocal is present, bright, focused (perhaps overly so for this mix) and yes, sibilant. I'd consider a few ms less delay time on the reverb, but MORE pre-emphasis/reflection; that will help it sit better in the broad soundfield established in the backing track. I might maybe also nudge the vox a bit back in the mix. Just a tad, like 1-1.5dB. loosen the tight grip of the compressor too, let it breathe a little. The mental image I have is a big stone amphitheater, with you sitting on an obelisk right by the audience, and the orchestra is like 100 feet behind you. Both things sound good in and of themselves; but there's an artificiality to the field right now, and you need to mate the vocals better to the backing track. The bacing track has the better placement choices at the moment. Just one guy's opinion, I hope it does not offend, I intend to be kind and constructive.

BTW we should do an "O, Holy Night" thread or something; I have one too. :)

Hmmmm, I have one too. Very nice, btw!

Thanks a lot for all the responses on this one!

Here's the latest mix. I applied a de-esser twice, decreased the hi's, decreased the reverb, adjusted the gate and compressor and lowered the volume on the vocals.

Let me know if it's fine now. Oh, and I made the file downloadable if anyone wanted a copy for Christmas. :D

This is much more even and smooth... I realized never gave you the word list... "rejoices"...."voices" (a little) "Christ", "us", "gospel", "chains" "cease"... When you're back in your throat (voice positioning), it doesn't happen because your cheeks are relaxed, when you're forward in your sinus/adenoid space, you have a tense-cheek smile, I'd wager, and that's contributing. Anyway, your new mix minimized it to an extent, and it a much more palatable mix! Well done!

P.S. I did an arrangement of this song too, if you want to hear it, http://www.reverbnation.com/philtraynor, first tune on the list...

I disagree. The performance is nice, but it's just too blatant to ignore. It's distracting.
I mean not that it should be ignored, but that everyone already mentioned it here, and I didn't need to further mention it to make the point... ;)
