can't decide, Marshall jtm60 or Fender hotrod deluxe

I've been shopping around for a decent tube amp and kinda narrowed it down to these 2 from my local dealer.

I'm gong to be doing plenty of recording and gigging down the line so i need that flexibility.

Are either of these amps known to be classics?, they both have really great vintage tones, i love the dirty clean crunch from the hot rod.

jeez i can't decide, i play rolling stones/john squire/indie type stuff sometimes with some hard rock thrown in.

I love plenty of tone not too overdriven type sound, like ac/dc but not as heavy.

any opinions on these amps would be great!!!!!!!

I thought that was obvious, jtm or hrd, that was either a dumb reply or you can't/haven't read the post.

i have a hot rod deville and I love it. The deluxe dosen't have quite as much power as the deville but i have played loud gigs and never went over half way up with the deville...so the deluxe probably has ample power.

At 1st i hated the overdrive in this amp but it just takes more tweaking than usual. I have been able to get some really good overdrive sounds since I worked with it some.

I had an old 100 watt marshall stack that i really liked too. It was stolen a few years ago.

As far as recording goes, I have a peavey "studio pro" sol.id state amp that is quite good (and cheap). I have gotten some great sound with the peavey.

To me amps are like mics, different flavors for different things...you can't have too many.

Actually that goes for guitars too...and, mic pres...and effects petals and......oh, never mind

I've always considered Fenders better for clean to bluesy overdrive good,and Marshalls from there to hard rocking good.
If ya know what I mean.:cool:

I have the HotRod 410 Deville. IMO I think it sounds better then the Marshalls. Great clean tones and decent overdrive. If you looking for metal dist you wont find it in this amp. But for clean, rock, jazz, blues tones. This is it!

Back to reality!

I was wondering if anyone had any reliablity issues mainly with the jtm60 re-issues, i read a post on another board that there was problems with some of these marshalls.

I don't like the sound from a jcm/dsl valve marshall, if anyone ever played a jtm60 or 45 they'd probably know what i meant, you can get i really good clean tone from these, vintage.

I know the tones on these amps are different, but i like them both, so when it comes down to it ,i'll go for the most reliable and probably the quitest for recording.

Thanks guys, decisions made, fender it is, i found some pretty cool mods for this amp so theres plenty of flexibility down the line, bloody heavy though...lol

You haven't given enough info to give a real answer. What kinds of tones do you love. Name some artists or some disks that sound like what you want.

I've played the Deville and the Deluxe. I liked them, but didn't love them. Then I retubed the Deluxe with NOS tubes (Mullards and Jan Phillips) and replaced the speaker with Celestion Vintage 30. Much nicer. Great Blues and some really nice lead tone ala Allman Brothers. Its not a good amp for heavy crunch or more modern rock tones. This is not an el34 based tone.

Another good amp is the Peavey Classic 50. Not as nice a clean tone, but passable. Great lead tone. It can go more modern lead sounding and crunch than the Deluxe. I got some nice Santana, Gary Moore, Brian May tones out of it without a pedal. Of course, I used a pretty tricked out strat. I'm an old guy. The more modern tones just aren't my thing, but I was impressed with the sounds a kid in my sons band got out of it.

If you like that el84 tone, find an old Boogie Blues Rocket. Nice clean, great blues lead that can go into Jeff Beck land.
 
I've always found Marshall amps to be pretty one-dimensional. They do one thing extremely well - but thats it.

I'd take the Fender every time.

I have had a deluxe for almost 7 years. gigged the shit out of it - left it all day or night in the car in way below freezing - set it up and blasted within minutes (on a regular basis, I live in alaska) played all over the state and bounced the hell out of it on incredibly bad roads.

it still averages 15 - 25 hours of running time a week. Nothing but tube replacement in all that time.

If that isn't reliable, i donl't know what is...

sounds are good - dynamic and organic feeling - plenty of power to gig, not so much that you can't get it to sweat.

does great feedback if you know how...
i also use a mesa v-twin pedal to get a more liquid tone - it's a good match.

of course - ymmv. mine has paid for itself a hundredfold. The soundman at one of AK's busiest clubs remarked that he wished more guitarists had as good a setup as mine.
