Drum size and tuning

I have a set of Tama StarClassic Birch in my studio. I am not a drummer, they are used by my drummer and any bands that want to use them for recording. Through the years I have found that small drums record well so I bought this small set: 20 kick, 10, 12 toms, 14 floor and 10 1/2 snare? I think they sound awesome, actually they sound huge. Any thoughts on this topic would be welcome. Also I have been tuning the set with a drum tuning dial gauge, It sounds great and is repeatable, does anyone else use these?

20' Bass drum is pretty standard, i guess the 14' floor tom is ok too, but i'm surprised the 10 1/2' snare is going strong. Don't any of the drummers that come in ask for another one? I guess you must have a pretty good dial gauge technique going on :)

I own the drum dial and use it for rough tuning and then I tune by ear (to a specific note. always a natural).
The kicks that I use are 20" in diameter and I also have an 18" for real small clubs and quick gigs. I play 10" and 12" rack and 14" and 16" floor and I am stubborn about using only 14" snares. I like there to be 2" difference in the diameters of my toms because I like to tune them with a full step between each drum. I tune the kick and the snare to the same note (a G) but octaves apart. My kit is a custom kit using the Star Classic hardware. I like Tama drums, but they're all good.

I think I have a 10 1/2 snare, that is what came with it, would that be standard? I could be wrong, could it be a 14?

10.5" snare is never standard.

You most liklely have a 14" snare and terrible length guesstimation skills.
 
Yup, it's probably a 14. That's the standard. It might even go down to 12 but 10 1/2 is pretty small. 10 1/2 would mean its almost the same size as your small Tom.
 
Not only that, drums typically don't come in half sizes. Shell depth maybe, diameter, pretty much never.
 
He probably laid his dick on the head and then times it by 2 = 10.5" lolz

Sounds like you've got it going on. I also have tama starclassic birch drums.
