Hey guys,

I play guitar and I want to record a cover album with a couple of mates for the summer holidays with piano, guitar, vocals and possibly drums and bass (recorded individually) I am a complete newbie so all the information I have is from a couple of people from the guitar shop.

I have a couple of questions regarding interfaces:

1. Because I have a very limited budget range (100 bucks AU) I dont have enough money to buy a mixer. Would it be possible to record the guitar piano and vocals by JUST using a computer recording interface (U-control UCA222 BEHRINGER) plugged directly into the computer and still have a decent sound??

2. Is it possible to record drums with the ubove mentioned interface ??

3. If its not possible to record drums, does the sound from a drum machine or a virtual drum sound any good ??

4. Is there anything I really need to know before going ahead with this ??

5. I haven't bought anything yet so If i have the wrong mindset for what equipment i should be getting please tell me !!

Thanks heaps !!

you would need a preamp and microphone.

you could use a drum VSTi

4. Is there anything I really need to know before going ahead with this ??

those links will help out with that, and remember not to go buying things unless your 1000% sure you absolutely need it.

your budget is 100 bucks?

well if that the case i'd get a Lexicon Alpha... (i've said this a lot inthe last 2 days haha)

its 80 bucks and comes with cubase LE.... if you run Vista.. .make sure you get Cubase LE 4.

www.musiciansfriend.com you can look it up there.

along wiht a mic if you dont have one.

Someone else's PIN ... help you get that budget up over $100!:D

Please, on behalf of the rest of the world, don't record Mustang Sally on your album of covers. Thanks

It is possible to record everything that you want to record for under $100. Here are a couple of options.

1. Get a USB condensor microphone. You can find several for under $100. Like the Blue Snowball ($99), Nady USB-1C ($89), or MXL 990 USB ($99). Then download some free software like Audacity or Reaper (free to try).

2. Get yourself a USB Interface like the Blue Icicle ($60) or MXL Mic Mate ($40) then get a cheap condensor microphone and cable. I like this option better because you'll be able to change microphones if you want.

With either option you can either record one instrument at a time or set the microphone up and record the whole band. It's probably not the ideal way, but it can definitely be done. Just remember to HAVE FUN!!! :D:D:D

Do you have a microphone and cable?

I was planning on borrowing one from school. you know like the assembly microphones :D would that work ??
