Using insert as out for monitor mix but not cutting signal

I searched this and using inserts as direct outs has been addressed but I was wondering if there was a way to use the insert signal as sort of an extra aux send and letting the signal continue through the mixer... Also if this degrades the signal by pulling some "juice" off it. Basically I'm hunting down ways to create custom monitor mixes. I don't have enough sends to give every player their own feed from their input so they can boost themselves in their headphone mix independent of the general headphone mix. Another way I was considering is using one of these personal monitors that lets you tap a mic line before it goes to a mixer as well as blend a mix signal with it. But this "tapped" signal would be pre-effects. Hope that was clear enough.

With Mackie (and many other) mixers, if you push the plug only part-way into the Insert jack it will split out the signal and also send it on to the rest of the mixer. That's the basis for my Using a Mixer with a DAW article. This article also shows an adapter you can get a Radio Shack that lets you insert the plug all the way for better mechanical stability, without breaking the signal path to the rest of the mixer.

If you want to get more elborate...

I think you should be able to do it with a 3-row patchbay....where it can maintain both a normal connection and split.

The normal would be the middle row...while the split output would be the top row, and the input the bottom row.
Some of my TT-Bantam patch bays are like that, 3-rows...though I don't wire them for that particular setup.
