First off I would like to state that I AM ALL FOR RECORDING WITH REAL DRUMS - but I don't have a drumset or regular access to one for recording. So I have been programming drums in FL Studio and have gotten the drums to sound "real" enough but it just makes it a bit hard to do fills and such. My question is, do any of you out there have any experience programming drums? if so, what are some good things to know - or even good software to have to accomplish this? My style of music requires fast-paced somewhat complex drums and FL Studio's hip-hop stuff just doesn't cut it (nothing against hip-hop...just not my style). I am self taught so I really don't know what I don't know - if you know what I mean:) So throw out anything that one may find useful and I would greatly appreciate it.

God Bless!

I might get flamed for suggesting it, but Hydrogen is a pretty awesome drum looping system. It only works on Linux, so, that pretty much excludes 90% of everyone. I thought I'd give em' props still, though.

This question comes up often. You can search around and find what others say about VST drums. You'll find EZDrummer at or near the top of the list.

have fun,

Toontrack stuff gets my vote...I dont think anything beats superior drummer in the vsti world for acoustic drums though many are good if not more intuitive (jamstix for one)..problem is any sequencer is going to have some limitations...you need to get it as human as possible..and that includes our failings...seems a bit pointless having a drum track that sounds like it been made by the worlds greatest 7 armed drummer if your playing a squire strat that you've had for a months practise with on top, if you get my drift

I use midi files for the back bone of my drums (maybe just the kick, or snare as well) then add my own percussion on top...works for what I do just now and keeps it from sounding "too perfect"

Addictive Drums. I did an entire album with this program (I use real drums too, so no knocks please) and you absolutely cannot tell that they're not real...because they are. They're samples of actual recorded drums and the software performs beautifully. They're programmable, easily, down to the smallest single snare ruff, or you can let the basic beats do their thing. Not very expensive and amazing results. Recommended an 11 on a scale of 1 - 10.

There are debates as to which is better, AD or EZDrummer etc. I tried several and AD was for me. Check out free demos of the ones you're interested in and see what works best for you. Good luck
