Yesterday, my son and I went to Luckenbach (TX, yes, like the song), and participated in the breaking of the world record for most simultaneous guitar players -- the count was 1,853. We were in a sort of creekbed basin, and my son and I were near the bottom. We were being led by a group on a stage that was probably 60 feet above where I and my son were standing.

We played two songs: predictably, "Luckenbach, TX", and Woodie Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land". The strumming pattern was well coordinated on the first song, and more diverse on the second song. We came up with a pretty powerful sound on the first song, I guess because of the synchronized strumming. We overpowered the PA (which I'm sure could have been turned up louder, but whatever) at some points, and there was a stanza where they turned it off and it was just the acoustic guitars and all of us singing (with a disproportionately large percentage of people who could actually sing - but not me :) ).

Sounded cool!! I don't know if they'll list all of us in the Guinness Book of World Records - I suppose not. Here's the web page about it: http://www.voicesofagratefulnation.org/

Was anyone else there? Sorry I missed you if so.

1853 guitar players and no one thought to bring a video camera? wtf?

I heard that they were doing something similar here in KC only with "Smoke On the Water". They did it at a baseball field somewhere around town. I heard about it ahead of time but didn't end up participating. They were going for the world record, but it was something more along the lines of 1,400 people. So I guess 1,800 people is the new benchmark!

yeah, the old record was, I think, 1803, and it was Smoke on the Water, played in Germany.

There was a lot of video - maybe it'll take a while to get up on the web.

For a while, I considered trying to bring in some recording equipment, but they weren't even allowing guitar cases! (not sure why, except that it was pretty much standing room only, and I guess there wouldn't have been room)

We broke that record right here in the KC area at the minor leauge ballpark with over 2000 of us playing "Smoke on the water"...Im not sure if the record still stands or not...but there is a plaque at KYYS 97.3 FM from Guinness.

rats - really? Was it actually over 2000? 2000 was our goal, and I saw people walking around with larger numbers on their shirts, but it turns out that a couple hundred web-registrants didn't show, so the final tally was 1853. The organizers were sure it was a record, but I never heard anything about KC.

After some Googling, it looks like it was only 1683 guitarists here in KC back in June of 2007.

There were 2 different ones that summer...I think there used to be video on the stations website...it sounds like we had better go back to the ball park...we cant have Texans besting us...they do have an advantage though...all they have to do is lead a lamb in and many men will follow trying to seranade it.
