been looking for a new distortion pedal and am leaning towards the Fulltone 2 overdrive. What is the "real world" difference between the 'normal' version and the 'mosfet' version. I understand that mosfet is just a different type of transistor. I'm just wondering what the practical differences are. Does it affect the tone? If so, how?

MOSFET stands for Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor. They are a type of transistor that operates similiar to a vacuum tube. Tubes and MOSFETs both are current amplifiers requiring an output transformer. Basically a device or amp with MOSFETs will sound more like a Tube circuit than one with Junction Transistors.

The characteristic curves of a V channel Mosfet look a lot like a vacuum tupe pentode.

A MOSFET power amp does not necessarily require an output transformer; that would only be if the circuit was configured to emulate a tube power stage. Also, tubes and MOSFETs are probably better thought of as voltage-input amplifiers since the grid/gate currents are negligible.

MOSFETs can be enhancement or depletion mode, and N or P channel, but I don't know about V channel

A Mosfet like a Jfet will Tube like characteristics when over driven and unlike a Regular BJT Transistor has a very high input impedance which makes them more suitable for Guitar use .... Most poeple think of mosfets being in the output stage of power amps and therefore high power devices but in the Fulltone I believe they probably use a Small signal Mosfet like 2n7000 .....

I like the sound of Fets and Mosfets but I find they are a Bitch to work with as Biasing can be a bit problematic as they have such wide tollerances , well at least with Jfets .....

Cheers
