I have a basic program from "MAGIX" but after laying down 1 track of guitar I try to lay down a second track while listening to the first. When I play it back there's a 1/2 second or so delay. I'm familiar with latency but is there any way to avoid this? I also have a Cubsae LE program but I'm not currently using it. If I did use it would I still have the same problem?

You could try another audio driver...asio, wdm or mme I think are the main ones.

Are you applying any plugin effects to the first track? That can sometimes spell delay in signal. That happens if I use some certain heavy reverb plugs to set up a direct vocal monitoring send.

I use Cubase 4 and i had the same problem until yesterday. I asked the same question to everyone and they all told me to make the latency on my software go as low as possible. I did that and i still had delay. So what i did was change from my ASIO driver to my Audio Intereface Driver. Fortunatly for me, my Audio interface has a Direct Monitor Function that allows for zero-latency (it's a Tascam US-122L). That did the trick for me. P.S.-You can just turn the volume off of the instrument your recording and you wont hear the delay. HOPE THAT HELPS!

Latency come from your soundcard and its drivers.

On-board and gamer soundcards are cheap (40cents worth of chips in 'em) with horrible drivers.

#1 Rule of Recording: You MUST replace the built-in soundcard.

Here's a good guide and tested suggestions that work: http://www.tweakheadz.com/soundcards_for_the_home_studio.htm

Willy, I also have a Tascam US122 interface. This might be a stupid question but how exactly do I switch from the asio to my tascam? Does this mean that the Tascam is now the soundcard? Did this solve your delay problems? Can you still monitor the first track while recording the second?

It's not a stupid question at all. To change it, go to "Devices" on your software (it might be diffrent on your computer). Then click on "Device Set up". There you should see something like VST audio system. Assuming that you already downloaded the driver from the cd, change the thingy from ASIO to US-122L/US-144.

For your second question, i think it does replace your soundcard but i'm still not 100% sure. Don't quote me on that :)

To solve the delay problem, your going to have to find the "control panel". It should be under the "Device Setup" Too. click on the control panel and a screen will pop up, it will say tascam. the onlything you can do on that screen is change the latency. Change it to the "Lowest Latency".

You should be able to monitor first tracks and recored second ones over it with that.

Hope that helps!

I find i notice a huge difference when i mute all the tracks i dont need to hear. . .

But im sure there are way better ways to do this.
