@Doulos
yes you have valid points on the level of professional mixing.

But the spec here was for a fun sketch mix for youtube video

This sound will spread across laptops and headsets, there's not real understanding, but the body of the mix is what will matter most, at least there is enough tribal feel with bass and drums here to compensate.

What I trying to say is our judge chose the winner listening in these conditons and Lo-Fi Mikes simply had the body of the mix nailed, enhanced and sound alive. If that comes across to most listeners on that platform, it's favourable.

Of course, if there were demand for a professional version. Recording is more organised and you have to trust the sound engineers with the final word.

I hope a professional picks it up and does a cover version then we will hear the bigger mix, but i doubt if this will be used again. It's destined for the internet snapshot.

cybergord I'm sure it was hard to choose a winner from the selected mixes and i do think the mix you chose was more polished. I just wanted to show some "valid points" as to what's standard sure you can have a bass shy mix on youtube with no kick drum if you want to, but in the days of earbuds and small computer speakers I can say i don't see it helping your video much but ive been known to be wrong before.

I hope you guys that did listen to my review could hear what was going on and maybe find a way to check the balance of your own mix in the manner i tried to demenstrate. I think this is a great way to learn how to build the fundementals of a mix starting out. Soon you won't need the refrences as much and can start doing your own thing, but some kind of general guidelines at first is always a good start. I'm still going to submit my mix, but can't yet since im working like a mofo. I doubt I'll do that much better then most of you guys but I'll give it a shot :)

Oh yea Mikey...is that it? that's bass shy mate...here, have a listen to ....nah, I'd better not.
Was gonna kick some 50hz at ya but I don't wanna be responsible for damaging anyone's monitors....but the thought was there. LOL :D

I do agree with you though doulos24...my mix was clearly the best. ;)
But these laptop youtuber's just don't know their highs from their lows. They had Mikey's mix uploaded on youtube days ago...infact, I think he was in on it and it was all just a big scam to promote Mikey's $100 passives. :p

ps....vote for me!

Have really enjoyed this thread lads...it's been great fun to mix a fantastic song.

When I listen to the mixes I hear +0db type clips and not a little distortion coming through.
I was wondering about other listeners. Is it my spkr/phones that are the problem?

thanks for the laugh

there was a good amount of hash on some of the raw tracks. not all of them but some.

as promised this is my first rough mix let me know what you think drums might be to loud since I was"cutting up the loops first I'll have to rest and come back to it im trying to get the elements to sit well then I'll sweeted an automate but minus drum arangment this is a 15 min rough mix but it grooves baby it grooves

That's sounding excellent mate, I can tell you've being working on those drums, though if I may...don't roll um too much or infact, roll um faster and off beat. This track needs the Dave Grohl treatment rather than the big band type breaks.
It's sounding great though mate and I hope you finish it. Bassline is spot on.

Mart.

yeah mart I would if i had each sample instead of just loops, also on the kick drum only parts I'd add some low toms in the breaks, but I'm working with what I have :) Everything else is his tracks, but I had to get a kick that would work with the bass and I agree I really dig how the bass tone came out :)

That's sounding excellent mate

thanks I'm doin my best with it :)

Here is my remix: Soul Motion :D

I was able to reduce the sibilance from my first mix. I tried to make the mix a little bigger and did the raise the level of the drums during the two hard breaks. That was something that bugged me about my first mix.
