Slowing becoming un-noob.
MAIN QUESTION:
So how are the preamps on the mbox? are they acceptable? I don't need anything amazing, just something that isn't complete shit.

If you want to read more on my situation:
So I was planning on getting a nicer protools interface (002 or 003) but then I had to pay my registration deposit at school and now I'm really broke...

So I'm thinking of getting the Mbox Mini. (I already have an 8 channel interface that I'll use for drum recording into Cubase then transfer the files to pro tools)

I would use the mini for recording vocals and guitars and all the other stuff that I only need 1 or 2 channels of simultaneous input.

Thanks,

-Elliot

Well they are definitely not top of the line but for your needs they will do just fine. I record alot of people using my Mbox2Pro and the result is usually pretty satisfactory (after proper mixing). Some people don't even believe I'm using MBOX built-in pre's. But yeah, the simple answer is they will do just fine for your needs based on your question here.

Alright, thanks. Good to know. I'll probably end up buying the RNP and bypassing the pre's eventually. But yeah.

Thanks again for the info.

I use the M Box 2, but prefer M Audio DMP3 or even my Mackie 1402VLZ3. My Digi hardware won't work properly powered by my G4 1.67 laptops' USB, loses connection when using phantom power. My channel 2 input XLR has issues, so I just use the TRS inputs on the M Box 2.

My problems follow the input, not a cable thing. I was told I have a bad unit but they never offered a free repair, so I haven't pursued sending it off. Plus I use it everyday and being without hardware for an undetermined amount of time isn't something I want.

I like the DMP3 better anyway, so its a non issue.

I had the Mbox Mini and though its preamp had more gain than the original Mbox, I liked the sound of the original Mbox preamps better, especially when using the DI for bass.

I think the original Mbox preamps sound better than the preamps in my Digi002 Rack, although they have a LOT less gain.

I sold the Mini though. I had intermittent distortion that I could never get resolved and my original Mbox never gives me that problem.
