Adding outs to interface

Don't stare at the eye.
My interface is a TASCAM FW1804. It only has stereo outs, but it does have an ADAT port for adding up to 8 outs. I need to add some outs so I can send individual channels out to external FX then back in to Cubase.

There are lots of multi-channel preamps for adding input via ADAT (I know--I've got an Octane for adding 8 ins via the ADAT in) but so far the only one I see that specifically claims to go out as well as in is the Behringer ADA8000.

Does anyone know of any other low to mid budget device that will add outs via my ADAT? Pre's aren't important--since my ADAT in is already occupied, I'll only be using this for outs.

Thanks!

have not researched this but off the top of my head the MOTU 2408 rack unit should work, even in MkI vintage which should be available in the $100-150 range (used) (just guessing on price as well)

Look for an Alesis AI3, pretty cheap used these days. Same converter as the Behri; in fact Alesis designed it and sold it to Behri.

Plus 1 for the motu... talk about the swiss army knife of digital IO... handles TDIF, ADAT, analog, SPDIF... adat sync... the routing is phenominal. It's a propritary PCI card interface but can be used as a stand alone... you may even decide it rates as your primary interface... I love mine.

That's good to hear. But check out my scenario and tell me if you think it'll work like this:

The TASCAM (firewire) is the interface. So the MOTU would be connected from the TASCAM ADAT out to the MOTUs ADAT in--then I'd use the MOTU's 8 line outs for single track sends. Does that make sense?

I'm just afraid the 8 outs on the MOTU are only designed to pass along the signal from the Firewire, and that the ADAT is only for connecting other devices when you're using the MOTU as the primary interface.

Perfect sense... and it's certainly capable of that...

Nope... there are 24 channels of ADAT and TDIF that can be routed in 8 channel banks to any other format bank... it's very flexible...

You can read up on the mk3 at the MOTU Site, and I suggest that... the mk2 has essentially the same features... I've seen the mk2 going for about 100 on ebay recently...

I don't know why no one ever talks about these things... I tripped over it when I was looking for a better way to interface two tascam digital desks with a mackie hard disc recorder...it's been a solid performer for me for years...

Great info! Thanks! Any idea how the older mk1 compares in terms of flexibility? From what I read, it should be the same...

I don't... I bought new right after the mk3 came out... never looked at that one
