What bit version OS would be best for audio recording? Should i just go with 64 cuz of the 4gb ram?

Depends on whether your hardware you're using has 64 bit driver support. Most that I have seen don't so it's best to look into that first. Safer route is to stick to 32.

32 works fine for me

never had any major problems with performance, i run pt mpowered7

bit

i'm using a presonus fp10 in cubase sx3 and it all says 64 bit is supported so i guess its safe. So performance wise, it should be better?

what says 64 is supported? Cubase or the FP10? Cubase wouldn't be the problem, it would be your external hardware.

sx3 isnt a 64 bit app... so it still runs in a 32 bit mode... in order to get a 64bit version there's a semi supported version of C4 and the new C5 is supposed to have a true 64bit version...

I would not use XP64 in any situation any more. Vista64 possibly, but only if you're planning on using (and actually beign able to utilise) 8+GB of RAM. XP64 is not only End Of Life as of TODAY, its not beign supported by several companies, and it is definitely not being developed for by anything coming up.

If you're using a Firepod and SX3, you are not going to have the projects to take advantage of extra ram, and your software is limited in a big way.

dont be too sure about this...

while xp's days are definately numbered... it seems to have an extended life... as vista has not really caught on as MS would have liked... and they are already starting to kill it off...

Well I'm a Microsoft Partner, so I'm 100% sure about this, lol. I've been talking to my Microsoft Rep for a while now. And 1/30 was official End Of Life date for MS selling XP. what any retailers or distributors have in stock now is all thats left. MS is not producing or selling copies anymore.

well that's interesting... has your rep said anything about the roll out on the next OS???

That's what my MS rep told me. I told him it doesn't matter what he does or doesn't sell we won't be buying Vista and if we can't get XP from him we'll find other solutions.

Xp isn't going away any time soon.

That being said XP64 had very limited support to begin with so whether your hardware will have drivers for it is another story. This includes ALL your hardware not just audio stuff. My sound card was supported but not my MIDI interface or MIDI keyboard. I just ended up going back to 32 bit.
